This paper conducted its research based on the recognition of the problem that ‘if 『Mencius』 and 『Sun Tzu's Art of War』 are viewed only from the perspective of the opposition of the royal way and the vulgar way in a dichotomous manner, the essential value of the classical military code may be diminished or only voices of anti-war without alternatives may be raised.’ Accordingly, based on the core moral concepts of 『Mencius』, the Four principles and the Four Virtues as a theoretical foundation, the entire contents of 『Sun Tzu's Art of War』 were closely compared and analyzed in terms of military strategies and views on warfare, thereby arguing that morality and the art of war are not in conflict with each other. First, in Chapter I, along with raising issues, it was emphasized that Mencius and Sun Tzu had similar positions, such as emphasizing that they “value harmony in war” and “value the lives of the people over profit from war.” Chapter II explained in detail 『Mencius』 views on war and military strategy. In Chapter 3, by analyzing the warfare and military strategies of 『Sun Tzu's Art of War』 through the Four principles and the Four Virtues, which are the main ideas of 『Mencius』, we derive the key elements that are self-evident or that are judged to have similar aims in the two works. In conclusion, I think it is significant in that it does not present a conflict between the royal way and the way of deception, but rather identifies the commonalities between the two writings and concludes that “even from the philosophical perspective of Mencius, who only pursued righteous warfare, we can agree to a certain extent with the ‘strategy for war’ derived from the philosophical perspective of Sunzi, who valued the lives of the people and sought to minimize the waste of blood tax.”

본 논문은 ‘『孟子』와 『孫子兵法』을 二分法的으로 王道와 詭道의 대립적 관점에서만 보게될 경우, 軍事古典의 본질적 가치를 貶毁하거나, 代案없 는 反戰의 목소리만 낼 수도 있다.’라는 문제 인식에 기반하여 연구를 진 행하게 되었다. 이에 따라 『孟子』의 핵심 道德槪念인 四端과 四德을 이론 적 기반으로 삼아 『孫子兵法』의 전체 내용을 대상으로 軍事戰略과 戰爭 觀을 면밀히 비교⋅분석함으로써, 道德과 兵法이 서로 상충하지 않음을 논증하였다. 먼저 Ⅰ장에서는 문제 제기와 더불어 ‘戰爭에 있어 人和를 重視’한다든 지, ‘戰爭을 통한 利得보다는 백성의 목숨을 重視’한다는 것을 강조한다 는 점 등을 통해 孟子와 孫子가 비슷한 입장을 취하고 있는 부분이 존재 한다는 점을 강조하였으며; Ⅱ장에서는 『孟子』의 戰爭과 軍事戰略에 대 한 觀點을 자세히 밝혔고; Ⅲ장에서는 『孟子』의 주요 사상인 四端과 四 德을 통해 『孫子兵法』의 戰爭과 軍事戰略에 대하여 分析해 봄으로써, 自明하거나 두 저술의 지향하는 바가 비슷하다고 판단되는 要素들을 導 出해내었다. 결론적으로 王道와 詭道의 대립이 아닌, 두 저술 사이의 공통점을 파악 하4여 “義戰만을 추구했던 孟子의 철학적 관점에서도 ‘백성의 생명을 중 시하고, 血稅낭비를 최소화하고자 하는 孫子의 철학적 관점에서 비롯된 戰爭戰略’에 대해서는 일정 부분 동의할 수 있다.”라는 결론을 도출하였다 는 점에서 의의가 있다고 생각한다.
