Public concern regarding offenders with mental illness has increased in recent years; however, empirical research on the experiences and perceptions of criminal justice officials who work directly with this population remains limited. This study examines and compares the experiences, perceptions, and burnout levels of police officers and probation officers in their interactions with individuals with mental illness. A total of 271 officers completed a structured survey. Group differences were analyzed using t-test and Chi-squared test, and regression analyses identified predictors of burnout. Results indicated that probation officers reported more frequent contact with mentally ill offenders and higher exposure to violence than police officers, along with elevated levels of burnout. Both groups showed that coping self-efficacy, the types of support agencies consulted, and the level of resource awareness had significant effects on burnout. These findings highlight the importance of targeted protective methods for criminal justice officials, including structured training, mental health education, and the integration of specialized staff.

최근 정신질환을 가진 범죄자에 대한 사회적 관심과 우려가 증가하고 있으나, 이 들과 직접 접촉하는 형사사법공무원의 업무 경험과 인식에 대한 실증 연구는 부족하 다. 본 연구는 경찰과 보호관찰관을 대상으로 정신질환자와의 접촉 경험, 인식, 그리 고 이들이 경험하는 소진 수준을 비교ㆍ분석하고, 소진에 영향을 미치는 요인을 탐색하고자 하였다. 경찰 및 보호관찰관 271명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 집단 간 차이는 t-test와 Chi-squared test를 통해서, 소진에 대한 영향은 회귀분석을 통해 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 보호관찰관은 경찰보다 정신질환자와의 접촉 빈도와 폭 력 경험이 높았으며, 정신질환자 관련 업무로 인한 소진 수준 또한 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 두 집단 모두 대처 자신감과 도움 요청 기관의 유형, 자원 인식 수준이 소 진에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 정신질환자를 대하는 형사사법공무원의 보호방안 마련, 교육 및 훈련체계 도입, 전문 인력배치 등 의 함의를 논하였다.
