This study empirically investigates the paradoxical characteristics of resources in the internationalization process of start-up firms. Specifically, it analyzes the effects of technology transfer and alliance experience on internationalization entry and performance, as well as the interaction effect between these two resources, through the lens of resource-based view and the paradox of resources. Applying a hurdle model to data from 2,393 start-up corporations, drawn from the '2022 Survey on Start-up Companies' by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the results showed that alliance experience significantly increases the likelihood of internationalization entry, and technology transfer also has a positive impact under certain conditions. However, when technology transfer and alliance experience coexist, a paradoxical phenomenon emerges where the probability of internationalization entry decreases. This suggests that resources do not always yield positive outcomes; rather, interactions between resources can increase complexity and causal ambiguity in resource utilization, thereby hindering decision-making. Meanwhile, the main effects and interaction effects of technology transfer and alliance experience on internationalization performance were not statistically significant. This indicates that internationalization entry decisions and performance creation may be influenced by different mechanisms. This study contributes to the theoretical extension of the resource-based view by empirically identifying the paradox of resources in the context of start-up internationalization and provides practical implications for developing internationalization strategies for start-ups and designing support policies.

본 연구는 창업기업의 국제화 과정에서 나타나는 자원의 역설적 특성을 실증적으로 규명하고자 한다. 특히 창업기업의 기술이전과 제휴경험이 국제화 진입 및 성과에 미치는 영향과 두 자원 간의 상호작용 효과를 자원기반관점과 자원의 역설 개념을 통해 분석하였 다. 중소벤처기업부의 ‘창업기업실태조사’ 2022년 자료를 활용하여 2,393개 창업 법인기업을 대상으로 허들모형(hurdle model)을 적용한 결과, 제휴경험은 창업기업의 국제화 진입 가능성을 높이는 중요한 요인으로 확인되었으며, 기술이전 역시 특정 조건 하에서 국제화 진입에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 기술이전과 제휴경험이 동시에 존재할 경우, 국제화 진입 가능성이 오 히려 낮아지는 역설적 현상이 확인되었다. 이는 기업이 보유한 자원이 항상 긍정적인 결과만을 가져오는 것이 아니라, 자원 간 상호작 용으로 인해 자원 활용의 복잡성과 인과적 모호성이 증가하여 의사결정을 저해할 수 있음을 시사한다. 반면, 국제화 성과에 대해서는 기술이전과 제휴경험의 주효과 및 상호작용 효과가 모두 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 이는 국제화 진입 결정과 성과 창출이 서로 다 른 메커니즘에 의해 영향을 받을 수 있음을 보여준다. 본 연구는 창업기업의 국제화 맥락에서 자원의 역설 현상을 실증적으로 규명함 으로써 자원기반관점의 이론적 확장에 기여하였으며, 창업기업의 국제화 전략 수립 및 지원 정책 설계를 위한 실무적 시사점을 제공한다.
