The purpose of this study is to find ways to support them to use rich and creative vocabulary while strengthening their ability to use spoken language-oriented language through picture book utilization programs that can stimulate imagination and creativity in Korean language classes for international students. As a research method for this, four teaching strategies using picture books based on a Whole Language Approach, and a three-step Korean class model, which is the pre-reading stage, the picture book reading stage, and the post-picture book reading stage, were established, and the study was conducted with 18 international student participants. As a result of the study, student participants showed a pattern of recognizing the contents of picture books as part of the whole, and they acquired Korean vocabulary or understood sentences by structuring the picture book story by reflecting the situation and context in which the character in the picture book is faced. The results of this study suggested the effectiveness of picture books not only in children but also in adult language learning, and confirmed that there is a high possibility of using picture books in enhancement of Korean language proficiency for international students. Based on the results of this study, the conclusion presented discussions and suggestions surrounding the possibility of using picture books in Korean language education, and the limitations of this study.

본 연구의 목적은 한국어 수업에서 유학생들이 문자언어보다는 구어체의 음성 언어 사용 능력을 강화함과 동시에 의성어나 의태어 같은 풍부하고 창의적인 어휘를 구사할 수 있도록 지원하는 방안을 모색하려는 것이다. 이를 위한 연구 방법으로는 총체적 언어 접근법에 기반한 네 가지 그림책 활용 교수 전략과 그 림책 읽기 전 단계, 그림책 읽기 단계, 그림책 읽기 후라는 세 단계 한국어 수 업 모형을 설정한 후, 외국인 유학생 참여자 18명을 대상으로 연구를 진행하였 다. 연구 결과, 유학생 참여자들은 그림책의 내용을 전체에서 부분으로 인식하 는 패턴을 보였으며, 그림책 속 등장인(동)물이 처한 상황과 맥락을 반영하여 그림책 이야기를 구조화하면서 한국어 어휘를 습득하거나 문장을 이해하는 모 습을 보였다. 이와 같은 연구 결과는 아동뿐만 아니라 성인의 언어 학습에서도 그림책의 효용성을 제시해 준 것이자, 유학생의 한국어 역량 강화에 있어서도 그림책의 활용 가능성이 크다는 점을 확인시킨 것이었다. 본 연구 결과를 근거 로 결론에서는 한국어 교육에 있어 그림책의 활용 가능성을 둘러싼 논의와 제 언 그리고 본 연구의 한계점을 제시하였다.
