This study aims to examine the ways of artistic expressions with light in contemporary art by illuminating its property through ontological contemplation. Since the ancient times, light has influenced on the thoughts and religions all around the world by functioning as the symbol of truth, goodness, vitality, and Western artists, in particular, have developed artistic techniques such as stained glass and chiaroscuro in order to visualize it. Considered as psychological and spiritual being, light was discovered newly as physic material as modern science has developed. After the Impressionism colored daylights on canvas, light has been used as the artistic element and source due to the high technology since the mid twentieth century. On the contrary to the light source object, in material form, as parts of art works, James Turrell altered the ways of art appreciation with experience and immersion; he sets the whole exhibition space filled with light by hiding the light source. Distinguishing itself from the ways of virtual representation in VR pieces, this sort of immersion makes the whole space without original figurative object. Focusing on the works by James Turrell, in particular, this paper researches the significance and the ways of artistic expression with light in contemporary art by investigating the artistic and the theoretical basis in the aspect of immateriality and spirituality.

본 연구는 현대조형에서 빛이 발휘하는 특성을 존재론적 사유를 통해 조망하고, 이에 대한 예술적 발현의 방식을 고찰하는데 목적을 두었다. 빛은 고대부터 진리, 선, 생명력 등을 상징하는 은유체로 기능하며 동서양의 사상과 종교에 두루 영향을 끼쳤고, 예술가들은 이를 작품 안에서 시각적으로 가시화하기 위해 스테인드글라스나 키아로스쿠로 같은 기법을 발전시켰다. 정신적이고 영적인 존재로 간주되었던 빛은 근대과학의 발전 에 따라 구체적 입자를 지닌 물질로 파악되었고, 인상주의가 물감을 통해 표현했던 빛은 20세기 중반 이래 첨단 테크놀러지를 통해 조형의 주제일 뿐만 아니라 그 자체로 조형의 요소이자 원천으로 활용되었다. 빛의 발광 체인 광원 오브제는 물리적 형태로 조형의 요소를 갖춤으로써 시각 대상 물의 일부를 형성했지만, 캘리포니아를 중심으로 전개되었던 ‘빛과 공간 운동(Light and Space Movement)’의 제임스 터렐 작품들은 광원을 은폐 시키고 주변 공간 전체를 빛의 공간으로 변모시킴으로써 ‘관조’라는 시각 의 인지 방식으로부터 신체가 함께 개입된 ‘지각’과 ‘몰입’이라는 체험으로 작품 감상의 방식을 변화시켰다. 이러한 몰입은 VR 작품에서처럼 가상의 재현물을 다루는 방식과 구별되어, 작품이 재현하거나 모방하는 대상의 원본 없이도 공간 자체를 작품화한다. 여기서는 특히 제임스 터렐의 작품 을 중심으로, 그가 받은 예술적, 사상적 근거들을 비물질적, 정신적 측면에서 규명함으로써 빛이라는 요소가 현대조형에서 지니는 의미와 발현 방식을 고찰한다.
