This study aims to reinterpret the concept of "athletic virtue" in eSports through the ethical-philosophical frameworks of psychological egoism and ethical egoism, while taking into account the structural and cultural specificities of digital competitive environments. Prior research on eSports ethics has largely focused on fairness and sportsmanship, often applying traditional moral standards from physical sports without adequately addressing the distinctive nature of eSports. This paper argues that psychological egoism provides a descriptive lens for understanding the internal motivations of eSports athletes—such as immersion, achievement, and personal gratification —within a system governed by rules and devoid of physical interaction. However, the limitations of psychological egoism, particularly in addressing communal responsibility and moral legitimacy, necessitate the incorporation of ethical egoism. As a normative theory, ethical egoism allows for the reconciliation of individual interest with social responsibility, suggesting a framework in which athletes can pursue competitive success while maintaining ethical accountability to teams, fans, and the broader eSports community. By articulating the conceptual shift from psychological to ethical egoism, this study expands the notion of athletic virtue in eSports beyond technical skill to encompass moral autonomy and communal integrity. Ultimately, this research contributes to the theoretical grounding of eSports ethics and proposes a basis for the development of applied ethical education models for sustainable growth in the industry.

본 연구는 e스포츠의 디지털 환경과 구조적 특수성을 고려하여, ‘선수다움(athletic virtue)’이라는 개념을 심리적 이 기주의와 윤리적 이기주의라는 윤리철학적 틀을 통해 재해석하고자 한다. 기존 e스포츠 윤리 논의는 주로 공정성과 스포츠맨십에 집중되어 있었으나, 이는 전통 스포츠에 기반한 가치 체계를 그대로 적용함으로써 e스포츠의 본질적 차 이를 간과해왔다. 본 연구는 심리적 이기주의가 e스포츠 선수의 내적 동기, 즉 몰입과 성취욕, 자기만족의 추구를 설 명하는 데 유효한 설명적 틀을 제공하며, 디지털 경쟁 환경에서의 전략적 사고와 효율성 중심의 행위 판단을 정당화 할 수 있는 이론임을 밝힌다. 그러나 심리적 이기주의는 도덕적 정당성과 공동체적 책임의 문제를 설명하는 데 한계 를 지니며, 이를 보완하기 위한 대안으로 윤리적 이기주의를 제시한다. 윤리적 이기주의는 개인의 이익 추구가 타자 와의 관계 속에서 도덕적 정당성을 획득하고, 공동체적 신뢰를 형성하는 데 기여할 수 있는 윤리적 태도를 형성하는 기반이 된다. 본 연구는 이러한 이론적 전환 과정을 통해, e스포츠 선수다움을 단순한 기술적 역량을 넘어 도덕적 자 율성과 공동체적 책임을 포함하는 개념으로 확장하고자 하며, 궁극적으로 e-스포츠 윤리의 이론적 정립과 실천적 교 육 모델의 구축에 기여하고자 한다.
