This study examines Kim Keum-hee’s short story collection Christmas Tile as a literary work imbued with religious sensitivity, focusing on how existential concerns are artistically rendered through its narrative structure and symbolism. Set against the backdrop of Christmas and the COVID-19 pandemic, the collection portrays characters grappling with loss and loneliness who encounter moments of healing and consolation through human connection. While the stories do not explicitly address Christian doctrine or religious confession, they gain spiritual depth by exploring themes such as the fragility of life, the possibility of human solidarity, and the search for meaning. Notably, Kim Keum-hee began attending church and was baptized during the writing of this collection, a personal transformation that informs the subtle theological and existential undercurrents of the work. By analyzing recurring motifs, emotional resonances, and the structure of interlinked narratives, as well as the author’s essays on faith, this paper argues that Christmas Tile exemplifies a form of “religious realism.” It does not offer definitive salvation but instead invites readers to reflect on life’s unresolved pain and the grace found in small gestures of care. Thus, the work becomes a literary embodiment of Paul Tillich’s concept of “ultimate concern,” representing a quiet yet profound engagement with the sacred.

본 연구는 김금희의 연작소설 『크리스마스 타일』을 대상으로, 이 작품이 지닌 종교적 감수성의 문학적 형상화 양상을 분석한다. 『크리스마스 타일』은 크리스마스라는 상징적 시간과 팬데믹 이후의 일상이 라는 동시대적 배경 속에서, 상실과 고독을 경험하는 인물들이 타인과의 관계를 통해 치유와 위로의 순간을 경험하는 서사를 담고 있다. 특히 이 작품은 기독교의 교리나 신앙 고백을 전면에 내세우지 않으면서도, 존재의 의미와 삶의 불완전성, 관계의 가능성에 대한 사유를 통해 종교적 깊이를 획득한다. 작가는 해당 연작소설의 집필 과정에서 스스로 성당을 찾았고, 신앙을 받아들이게 되었으며, 이러한 작가의 회심은 『크리스마스 타일』에 내재된 ‘궁극적 관심’과 긴밀히 연관되어 있다. 본 논문은 각 단편의 서사 구조, 상징, 정서적 반복을 분석하고, 작가의 신앙 에세이와의 관련성을 통해 문학과 종교의 교섭을 탐색하 였다. 이를 통해 『크리스마스 타일』은 특정 종교의 교리를 전달하지 않으면서도, 오히려 그 비명시성 속에서 독자로 하여금 인물의 고통과 연대에 공감하게 만드는 한국 종교 문학의 중요한 성취로 평가될 수 있음을 밝히고자 하였다.
