This study examines the phenomenon of predicator class shift, one of the central issues in lexical aspect research, by reviewing various approaches to the topic and offering a perspective on the mechanisms that underlie the phenomenon. Since Smith(1991), predicator class shift has been described and analyzed based on situation types. This approach appears to reframe what is essentially a phenomenon of lexical semantics as one of syntax or sentential semantics. However, this study argues that this phenomenon is better understood at the interface between lexical semantics and pragmatics. Specifically, the mechanism behind predicator class shift can be characterized as focalization, whereby a particular part of the event or its periphery denoted by the predicator is highlighted. When such focalization occurs frequently and becomes conventionalized, the contextual meaning may be absorbed into the lexical meaning of the predicate, leading to semantic change and the formation of polysemy. Therefore, the phenomenon of predicator class shift may be effectively explained by adopting a pragmatic approach based on focalization, while also employing a polysemy-based lexical description for certain individual predicates.

본고는 어휘상 연구의 주요 쟁점 중 하나인 술어 부류의 전이 현상을 정리하고 이에 대한 접근 방식들을 검토하여 이 현상을 일으키는 기제에 대한 견해를 제시하였다. Smith(1991) 이후로 술어 부류 전이 현상은 ‘동 사 배열’을 대상으로 하는 ‘상황 유형’에 기반하여 기술되고 설명되어 왔다. 이는 본질적으로 어휘의미론의 영역에 속하는 현상을 통사론 내지 는 문장의미론의 현상으로 끌어간 결과로 보인다. 그러나 본고의 관찰에 따르면 이 현상은 어휘의미론과 화용론의 접면에서 설명해야 하는 것으 로 판단된다. 또한, 술어 부류 전이 현상의 기제는 술어가 나타내는 사건 의 일부 또는 그 주변부를 부각시키는 ‘초점화’라 할 수 있다. 이러한 초점화가 빈번하게 발생하여 관습화되면 그 맥락 의미가 술어의 어휘 의미로 흡수되어 다의어가 형성되는 의미 변화가 일어나기도 한다. 술어 부류의 전이 현상은 ‘초점화’에 기반한 화용론적 접근방식을 활용하면서 특정한 몇몇 어휘에 대해서는 다의어로 기술하는 방식을 적용하여 설명 할 수 있을 것이다.
