This study explores the calligraphic world of Baek Gwang-hun, also known as Okbong, a prominent scholar and calligrapher of the mid-Joseon Dynasty, through a multifaceted analysis of the Banghanggeol Myogal (Tomb Epitaph of Bang Hang-geol) located in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do. Highlighting the rarity of Baek's surviving haeseo (regular script) calligraphy, this research aims to elucidate the calligraphic and historical significance of the Banghanggeol Myogal. The Banghanggeol Myogal, a haeseo inscription transcribed by Baek Gwang-hun from a text by his teacher No Su-sin during his time as a Seonggyunjinsa, offers crucial insights into the development of Baek's calligraphy. This study reveals that Baek's calligraphic style was rooted in the tradition of Wang Xizhi, with specific influences from Nam Eon-gi, who was taught by Yang Eung-jeong and Kim In-hu. Han Ho, as a fellow calligrapher, is believed to have engaged in mutual exchange with Baek. Baek Gwang-hun's calligraphy garnered high acclaim even during his era. Contemporary literary records describe his calligraphy as "firm and upright (遒勁)", "dignified and imposing (凜然獨秀)", and "square, strict, and precise (方嚴精密)". Notably, his ability to synthesize Wang Xizhi's brushwork principles with his unique artistic sensibilities to forge an independent "Baekche (白體)" is consistently emphasized. The calligraphy of the Banghanggeol Myogal fully embodies these distinctive attributes of Baek Gwang-hun's art. A comparative analysis with Han Seok-bong's haeseo in the Heoyeop Sindo-bi (Stele of Heo Yeop) demonstrates that while both are grounded in Wang Xizhi's style, Baek's calligraphy exhibits greater vigor and robustness, with a palpable strength and individuality in stroke beginnings, endings, and transitions. This exemplifies the essence of Baek Gwang-hun's calligraphy, which actively pursued a "firm and upright" aesthetic. In conclusion, the Banghanggeol Myogal holds considerable calligraphic and historical importance as a rare exemplar of Baek Gwang-hun's haeseo, a source of insight into the formative influences on his artistic development, and a testament to his distinctive, powerful, and resolute brushwork. This research on the epitaph contributes significantly to our understanding not only of Baek Gwang-hun's calligraphy but also of the broader calligraphic landscape of the mid-Joseon period.
