The Netflix series (2023) that has garnered worldwide resonance stands out within the crime thriller genre as an innovative work that uniquely foregrounds multiple female characters who actively drive the narrative. This study posits the ‘ambivalent feminine archetype’ as a central characteristic underlying the appeal of the primary female characters and narratives presented in . Adopting Carl Jung’s concepts of the ‘collective unconscious’ and ‘archetypes,’ along with Erich Neumann’s theories on the ‘Great Mother’ and the ‘ambivalent feminine archetype,’ this research strategically limits its theoretical scope to align with its analytical objectives. The analysis reveals the unfolding, overlapping, and subversion of the ambivalent feminine archetype within the journeys and narratives of the female characters. The manifestation, layering, and inversion of this archetype serve as a critical mechanism that illustrates the intersections of motherhood and destructiveness, desire and deficiency, sacrifice and violence within individual characters as well as among multiple characters, significantly enhancing viewer immersion. Furthermore, the series' non-linear structure and juxtaposed interpretations surrounding these dynamics emphasize the core messages of the narrative. Additionally, the study finds that explores the transmission and overcoming of the ambivalent feminine archetype across generational storylines, thereby enabling marginalized female characters within the crime thriller genre to break free from cycles of violence and pursue new ethical and narrative possibilities. Ultimately, this research identifies the ambivalent feminine archetype as the fundamental principle that allowed to successfully generate compelling female characters and transcend traditional crime thriller conventions. Consequently, this analysis proposes the practical potential of strategically employing the ambivalent feminine archetype in future character and narrative development across diverse cultural content such as series and films.

세계적 공감을 얻은 넷플릭스 시리즈 <마스크걸> (2023)은 범죄 스릴러 장르 안에서 드물게 여러 여성 캐릭터들이 주도적으로 극을 이끌어가는 신선한 작품이 다. 본 연구는 <마스크걸>에 등장하는 주요 여성 캐릭터들의 매력과 여성 서사의 설득력을 관통하는 특징으로써 ‘양가적 여성성 원형’을 가정하고, 이를 중심으로 작품을 조밀하게 분석하고자 하였다. 이론적 배경으로는 칼 융의 ‘집단적 무의식’과 ‘원형’, 에리히 노이만의 ‘위대한 어머니’ 및 ‘양가적 여성성 원형’을 살펴보고 그 적용 범위를 분석 목적에 맞게 전략적으로 제한하였다. 분석 결과, <마스크걸> 속 주요 여성 캐릭터들의 여정과 서사에서 여성성 원형이 양가적으로 펼쳐지고 중첩되거나 전복되는 양상을 관찰할 수 있었다. 이러한 양가적 여성성 원형의 발현과 중첩 및 전복은 작품의 서사가 전개됨에 따라 단일 여성 캐릭터 내면 및 여러 여성 캐릭터 사이에서 그들의 모성과 파괴성, 욕망과 결핍, 희생과 폭력이 서로 교차하는 것으로 그려져 시청자가 이들에게 몰입할 수 있도록 하는 중요한 열쇠로 기능하고 있었으며, 이를 둘러싼 비선형적 구조 및 대조적인 해석은 작품의 메시지를 강조하는 데에 기여하고 있었다. 아울러, <마스크걸>은 세대 간 서사에서 양 가적 여성성 원형의 승계와 극복 과정을 조명함으로써, 범죄 스릴러 장르에서 비주류 여성 인물이 폭력의 악순환에 갇히지 않게끔 하는 서사적 전환을 모색하고 있 음을 발견할 수 있었다. 즉, <마스크걸>이 매력적인 여성 캐릭터들을 중심으로 전통적인 범죄 스릴러 장르의 문법을 넘어서는 긴장감과 설득력을 확보할 수 있었던 핵심적인 원리로서 양가적 여성성 원형이 기능하고 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 분석 결과를 통해, 종국적으로 본 연구는 향후 시리즈와 영화 등 다양한 문화콘텐츠 의 캐릭터 및 서사 창작 과정에서 양가적 여성성 원형을 보다 적극적으로 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 모색하고자 하였다.
