The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of self-reliance experienced in Korean society by marriage migrant women who have experienced spouse bereavement. In particular, the purpose of this study was to find the meaning of life through the process of marriage migrant women who have experienced spouse bereavement as the head of Korean society. For this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 6 marriage migrant women who bereavement their spouses using the Group D family center. All interviews were conducted individually in consideration of the participant's schedule, and were analyzed by applying Giorgi's phenomenological research method. As a result of the study, the statements experienced by the study participants in the process of bereavement and self-reliance of their spouses were derived three essential themes, eight sub-themes, and 20 central meanings: ‘life like a bolt from the blue’, ‘supporting a swaying life’, and ‘restoring self-esteem’. It was found that the study participants sought a journey for self-reliance in the midst of the dual vulnerability of spouse bereavement, and through this, continued the process of re-establishing their lives. This study is meaningful in providing basic data for practical policies and institutional measures to support the self-reliance of marriage migrant women after their bereavement.

본 연구는 배우자 사별을 경험한 결혼이주여성이 한국 사회에서 경험되어지는 자립 경험을 이해하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 특히, 배우자 사별을 경험한 결혼이주여성들 이 한국 사회에서 가장으로서 자립해 가는 과정을 통해 삶의 의미를 찾는 데 목적을 두 었다. 본 연구를 위해서 D군 가족센터를 이용하고 있는 배우자를 사별한 결혼이주여성 6명을 대상으로 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 모든 면담은 참여자의 일정을 고려하여 개별 면담으로 이루어졌으며, Giorgi의 현상학적 연구 방법을 적용하여 분석하였다. 연구 결 과, 연구 참여자들이 배우자를 사별하고 자립하는 과정에서 경험되어지는 진술은 ‘청천 벽력 같은 삶’, ‘흔들리는 삶 지탱하기’, ‘자존감 회복’이라는 3개의 본질적 주제와 8개의 하위 주제, 20개의 중심 의미가 도출되었다. 연구 참여자들은 결혼이주여성으로서 배 우자 사별이라는 이중적 취약성을 안고 흔들리는 삶 속에서 자립을 위한 여정을 모색 하며, 이를 통해 자신의 삶을 재정립하는 과정을 지속해 나가는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 결혼이주여성의 사별 후 자립을 지원하는 실질적 정책 및 제도적 방안 마련을 위한 기초자료를 제공하는 데 의의가 있다.
