Digital Humanities is an interdisciplinary field that integrates information and communication technology (ICT) with humanities research. Over the past four decades, this field has undergone significant advancements, evolving from early digital archiving to sophisticated applications leveraging internet technologies. In Japan, the “Humanities and Computer” research group at Information Processing Society of Japan has been actively fostering interdisciplinary studies since 1989. In 1998, Ritsumeikan University established the Art Research Center (ARC). Since then, ARC has been dedicated to the study, preservation, and dissemination of cultural heritage. Through initiatives such as the 21st Century Center of Excellence Program and the Global Center of Excellence Program, ARC has grown into a leading international hub for Digital Humanities. Currently, the center supports over 100 research projects in collaboration with both domestic and international scholars. Launched in 2002, the Virtual Kyoto Project utilizes GIS and VR technologies to digitally reconstruct Kyoto’s historical landscapes. The project has evolved over time, progressing from modern 3D urban models to Edo-period reconstructions based on historical maps and paintings. With emphasis on spatial analysis in humanities research, these efforts contribute to broader developments in Spatial Humanities and GeoHumanities. Furthermore, ARC has played a pivotal role in the creation of digital archives, including the Gion Festival Digital Museum, which enhances global access to Kyoto’s cultural heritage. These initiatives in Digital Humanities research highlight ARC’s leadership and its commitment to international collaboration.
