Objectives This study aims to examine the regional types and characteristics of North Korean folk dances prior to the division of the Korean Peninsula, thereby re-evaluating the value of North Korean folk dance. Through this, the necessity of preserving folk dances in North Korean regions is recognized. Method The research method is literature review. Encyclopedias and monographs such as Our Country’s Folk Dance, Joseon Folk Dance, and Joseon Folk Dictionary were referenced, as well as periodicals and newspapers published in North Korea, including Joseon Arts, National Cultural Heritage, and Chollima. Results This study examines the characteristics of North Korean folk dance before the division of Korea, focusing on regional distinctions. Among the regions, Hwanghae Province stands out with the highest diversity, featuring a total of 27 distinct folk dance types. North Korean folk dance displays pronounced characteristics according to thematic categories, including labor, human relationships and customs, and satire or humor. These thematic distinctions highlight the unique expressive qualities and social functions embedded in North Korean folk dance traditions prior to national division. Conclusion Research on North Korean folk dance goes beyond artistic value, reflecting the regional characteristics and lifestyles of each area before the division. North Korean folk dance possesses historical, cultural, artistic, social, and political value.

분단 이전 북한 민속춤은 지역별로 독특한 특성과 역사적 가치를 지닌 전통예술로, 남북한이 공유하던 문화유산의 일부이다. 본 연구는 이북5도를 기준으로 분단 이전 북한 민속춤을 노동, 전투/군사, 인간관계 /풍속/세태생활, 풍자/해학의 네 가지 유형으로 분류하고, 지역별 민속춤의 종류와 특징을 체계적으로 분 석하였다. 연구 결과, 황해도는 탈춤을 중심으로 한 풍자와 해학의 춤이 가장 발달했으며, 함경도와 평안 도는 노동과 전투와 관련된 춤이 다수 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 민속춤은 그 시대 지역의 문화 적, 예술적, 사회적, 정치적 맥락을 이해할 수 있다. 본 연구 목적은 분단 이전 북한 민속춤의 지역별 종류 및 특징에 관해 고찰하여, 북한 민속춤의 가치를 재조명하는 것이다. 이를 통해 북한 지역 민속춤의 보존의 필요성 과 함께 현대적 활용 및 남북한 문화적 단절 극복을 위한 학문적 기초를 제공하여 계승에 대해 고민하고자 한다.
