This research aims to explore Philipp J. Spener’s ‘theoretical arguments’ and ‘practical arguments’ on piety, and present implications in the Korean pastoral field. Spener was the greatest pioneer of pietism. Pietism is evaluated as the second reformation movement that renewed the church after the Reformation. In this study, I analyzed Spener’s arguments on piety, focusing on his “Pia Desideria”(1675), “The Spiritual Priesthood”(1677), “On Hindrances to Theological Studies”(1680), “The Necessary and Useful Reading of the Holy Scriptures”(1694), “Meditation on the Suffering of Christ”, “Resignation”, “God-Pleasing Prayer”), “Christian Joy”, and so on. I considered the important thoughts and points revealed in his arguments on piety as follows. Firstly, in macroscopic approach I analyzed ‘promoting of calling’, ‘personal education’, ‘usefulness of mystical theology’, ‘theology of Christian suffering’, and so on in Spener’s theoretical arguments on piety. Secondly, on the basis of Spener’s arguments on practical arguments on piety I focused on ‘the practice of piety of the whole family(parents and children)’, ‘reading and exploration of the Bible’, ‘the unity of knowledge and practice’, ‘the work of the Bible and the Holy Spirit that leads to the field of practice’, and so on. Thirdly, I suggest the practical implications based on the results of this study for today’s Korean Christians, including the ideas of ‘confirmation and management of the seminary students’ calling’, ‘practical life instruction’, ‘personal education’, ‘theology of suffering’, ‘altruism and devotion’, ‘family-oriented ministry’, ‘Bible education and expository preaching’, ‘quiet time’, ‘communication between pastors and saints’, ‘prayer that relies on the Holy Spirit’, ‘mystical spirituality and spiritual discipline’, ‘faithful preparation for sermon’, ‘consciousness of Christian ethics’, and so on. Considering the meaningful topics stated in Spener’s books, I suggest future extensions of this research into other various themes such as pastoral philosophy, perspectives on mission, Christian vocational ethics, view of Christian ethics, understanding of divers aspects of doctrine, Christian leader education, faith training, piety and sanctification, mysticism, prayer, altruism, Christian education practices, and other related fields.

본고의 연구 목적은 필립 제이콥 슈페너(Philipp J. Spener)의 경건에 관하여 ‘이론 적 논증’과 ‘실천적 논증’, 그리고 한국교회 목회현장에서의 현재적 함의를 분석하려는 데 두었다. 슈페너는 경건주의를 태동시킨 가장 뛰어난 선구자였으며, 경건주의는 종 교개혁 이후에 교회의 갱신을 모색했던 제2의 종교개혁으로 평가받고 있다. 이 연구 에서는 슈페너의 경건을 논증하기 위한 자료들로서 그의 저작 “경건한 요망(소 망)”(1675), “영적 제사장”(1677), “신학연구를 방해하는 것들에 관하여”(1680), “유익하 며 필요한 성경읽기”(1694), “그리스도의 수난에 대한 묵상”, “인종(忍從)”, “하나님이 기뻐하시는 기도”, “그리스도인의 기쁨” 등을 중심으로 분석했다. 본 연구자는 슈페너 의 경건논증에 나타난 핵심적인 사상들과 논점들에 대하여 다음과 같이 숙고했다. 첫 째, 거시적인 틀에서 슈페너의 경건에 관한 이론적 논증에 나타난 논지들로서 ‘소명의 식의 고취’, ‘인격적 교육’, ‘신비신학의 유용성’, ‘그리스도인의 고난의 신학’ 등의 주제 들을 설정하여 분석했다. 둘째, 슈페너의 경건에 관한 실천적 논증에 나타난 논지들로 서 ‘온 가족(부모와 자녀들)의 경건 실천’, ‘성경읽기와 탐구’, ‘지식과 실천의 일치’, ‘실천의 장(場)으로 인도하는 성경과 성령의 사역’ 등의 주제들을 설정하여 분석했다. 셋 째, 본 연구자는 본 연구에서 고찰한 논지들을 중심으로 오늘날 한국 그리스도인들에 게 ‘신학생들의 소명의식 확인 및 관리’, ‘실천적 삶 지도’, ‘인격적 교육’, ‘고난의 신 학’, ‘이타주의와 헌신’, ‘가정 중심의 목회’, ‘성경교육과 강해설교’, ‘큐티(묵상의 시간)’, ‘목회자들과 성도들 사이의 소통’, ‘성령을 의지하는 기도’, ‘신비적 영성과 영성 훈련’, ‘성실한 설교 준비’, ‘기독교 윤리의식’ 등 실천적 함의를 제시했다. 슈페너의 저작들에 진술된 의미 있는 논지들을 고려하여 향후 그의 문헌들과 관련된 다양한 연구 주제들 로 외연(外延)함으로써 목회철학, 선교관, 기독교 직업윤리, 기독교윤리관, 다양한 교 리 이해, 기독교 지도자 교육, 신앙훈련, 경건과 성화, 신비주의, 기도, 이타주의, 기독 교교육 실천 등 여러 방면의 연구로 확장될 수 있기를 기대한다.
