This study aims to introduce a selection of historical manuscripts collected and preserved by Jaun Lee Jung-gu (紫雲 李中久) during the period of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, as found in the "Five Generations of the Lee Jung-gu Family Historical Manuscripts" (李中久家 五代 古文書), housed in the Toegye Memorial Library of Dankook University. Jaun Lee Jung-gu was a member of the Gyeongju branch of the Yeoju Lee clan (驪州 李氏 慶州派), and his twelfth-generation ancestor was Hoejae Lee Eon-jeok (晦齋 李彦迪, 1491–1553), one of the "Eighteen Sages of the East." While serving as a government official, Lee Jung-gu witnessed the movements of the Donghak Peasant Army, the military interventions of Qing and Japanese forces in Joseon, and the sweeping changes taking place at the center of power. Eventually, he withdrew from officialdom and returned to his hometown. The *Five Generations of the Lee Jung-gu Family Historical Manuscripts includes various sources from this letter(ganchal, 簡札), transcriptions (saebon, 寫本) of central government documents, and a travel diary (ilgi, 日記)—which allow us to examine this turbulent time from Lee Jung-gu’s perspective. The correspondences reveal that Lee’s relatives and acquaintances exchanged greetings while sharing inquiries and news about the status of the Donghak movement and the central government. The transcribed documents show the issues Lee Jung-gu, then still in government service, was interested in. Finally, his travel diary records the eight-day journey back to his hometown and vividly conveys his reflections and emotions during that time. One limitation of the existing materials is that most of them consist of letters received by Lee Jung-gu, his own diary, and information he transcribed or collected, which makes it difficult to fully grasp his perception of reality and how he responded to it. Therefore, further examination of related documents within the Five Generations of the Lee Jung-gu Family Historical Manuscripts is needed to supplement this aspect.

이 글은 『이중구가 오대 고문서(李中久家 五代 古文書)』(단국대학교 퇴계기념중앙도서관 소장) 중 ‘동학농민혁명’ 활동 시기의 자운(紫雲) 이중구(李中久)가 수집하고 남긴 자료의 일부를 소개하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 자운 이중구는 여주(驪州) 이씨(李氏) 경주파(慶州派)로, 그의 12대 조는 동방 18현 의 한 분인 회재(晦齋) 이언적(李彦迪, 1491~1553)이다. 이중구는 관직 생활을 하던 중 동학농민군의 움직임, 조선 내 청일의 군사 파병, 중앙의 급직적인 변혁이 일렁이던 시기를 지켜보았고, 모든 것을 뒤로하고 고향으로 돌아갔다. 그런데, 『이중구가 오대 고문서(李中久家 五代 古文書)』에는 이 시기 이중구를 중심으로 한 간찰(편지)류, 중앙에서 생산된 문서의 사본(寫本), 일기(日記) 등의 고문서들이 확인된다. 즉, 이상의 자료를 검토한다면 이중구의 시선으로 당시의 모습을 살펴볼 수 있다고 생각된다. 간찰(편지)류에서는 이중구의 친족과 지인들이 이중구에게 안부와 동학과 조정의 형세를 묻고, 이와 관련한 이야기를 전달하였음을 알 수 있다. 중앙에서 생산된 문서들은 관직에 있던 이중구가 그 당시 어떤 점을 관심에 두고 있었는지를 보여준 다. 마지막으로 일기에서는 이중구가 고향으로 가는 8일의 여정을 살펴볼 수 있으며, 길 위에서의 이중구의 생각과 감정을 고스란히 나타낸다. 아쉬운 점은 이중구가 받은 편지, 이중구가 쓴 일기, 이중구가 필사하거나 모은 자료들이 주를 이루게 되어 그의 현실 인식과 대응법을 직접적으로 알 수 있는 기록 이 부족하다는 것이다. 이를 보완하기 위해서는 『이중구가 오대 고문서』 중 이중구 와 해당 시기와 관련된 자료들을 추가로 검토해야 한다.
