This paper explores the theological significance of baptism and its organic relationship to ecclesiology, examining how the process of initiation-including baptism-ought to be integrally connected to the identity and practices of the local church. Baptism is not merely a sign of personal faith confession; rather, it is a formative event that shapes Christian identity and life, and fundamentally signifies incorporation into the community of the Church. However, contemporary practices of baptism often lack a robust ecclesiological grounding. To address this gap, this study employs three theoretical frameworks: Avery Dulles’s models of the Church, Mary Douglas’s group-grid typology, and Jonathan D. Watson’s models of the initiation process. Dulles helps illuminate the theological identity of the Church; Douglas offers insights into the Church’s sociocultural structure; and Watson provides a typology for examining concrete practices of initiation. Based on these frameworks, local churches are encouraged to reflect on their own ecclesial identity and develop initiation practices in which theology and liturgical action are meaningfully aligned. Baptism incorporates individuals not only into the universal Church but also into a particular local church. Therefore, baptismal practice must be rearticulated in ways that reflect both its universal theological meaning and the sociocultural particularity of the worshiping community. This paper proposes an integrated theological and practical approach to baptism and ecclesiology as a constructive starting point for such reflection.

이 논문은 세례의 신학적 의미와 교회론의 유기적 연관성을 분석하 고, 세례를 포함한 입회 과정이 지역 교회의 정체성과 실천에 어떻게 연결되어야 하는지를 탐구한다. 세례는 단순한 개인적인 신앙고백의 표지를 넘어, 그리스도인의 정체성과 삶을 형성하는 사건이며, 교회라 는 공동체에의 입회라는 핵심 의미를 내포한다. 그러나 오늘날 세례 실 천은 교회론적 통찰과의 유기적인 연결이 부족한 경우가 많다. 이에 본 논문은 Avery Dulles의 교회 모델, Mary Douglas의 집단-격자 개념, Jonathan D. Watson의 입회 모델이라는 세 가지 이론적 틀을 통해 세 례와 교회의 이해와 실천 간의 상호작용을 진단하고자 한다. Dulles는 교회의 신학적 정체성을, Douglas는 교회의 사회문화적 구조를, Watson은 입회 실천의 구체적 유형을 분석하는 데 도움을 준다. 이를 바탕으로, 각 지역 교회는 그들이 어떤 교회인지 성찰하고, 신학과 실 천이 일치하는 세례와 입회 과정 구조를 개발할 수 있는 통찰을 얻을 수 있다. 세례는 보편적 교회로의 입회이자 특정한 지역 교회로의 입회 이기도 하다. 따라서 세례는 보편성과 더불어 공동체의 사회문화적 특수성을 반영하는 방식으로 재구성되어야 한다. 이 논문은 이러한 과제 를 위한 신학적이고 실천적 출발점으로서, 세례와 교회론의 통합적 접 근을 제안한다.
