Tabish Khair’s novels, The Thing About Thugs (2010) and Night of Happiness (2018), examine the intricate relationship between psychological trauma, cultural dislocation, and the quest for identity within postcolonial frameworks. Through the characters Amir Ali and Ahmed, Khair investigates the fragmentation of self that arises from societal prejudices, racial stereotypes, and the enduring consequences of both historical and personal violence. In The Thing About Thugs, Amir Ali adopts a Thuggee identity, while in Night of Happiness, Ahmed experiences profound grief for his wife Roshni. Khair effectively illustrates the challenges faced by individuals contending with fractured identities in hostile and biased settings. By utilizing narrative techniques such as repetition, intertextuality, and fragmented memory, Khair highlights the complexities of trauma and its significant influence on self-construction.
