Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights combines fantasy and dystopia to examine imagination as a force against authoritarianism. At the centre of the novel is Lyra’s quest to overthrow the totalitarian Church, representing resistance. Fantastical devices such as daemons, personifications of the soul, and dust particles, symbols of love and consciousness, enhance the text and metaphorically depict the human spirit’s revolt against oppression. Pullman’s book resonates with the wider theme of young adult dystopian novels, capturing the anxieties around quick technological and bioengineering breakthroughs. At its core, this critique underlines how Pullman’s fictional world captures the realities of contemporary problems, symbolically solving them through young protagonists’ quest for justice and fairness.
