This paper explores the themes and representations of Colonialism in the select plays of Asif Currimbhoy, one of the most significant voices in Indian English drama. Asif Currimbhoy’s plays reveal the notions and aspects of colonialism. He pinpoints the de-humanizing acts of colonialism with a reference to the influence of capitalism in all walks of the Post-Independent Indian life in his plays. His plays were undertaken as subject of study and research and were even translated into regional language. Asif’s plays comprise a wide range of important themes from History and Politics. The issues such as race, class and gender which are prominent in most of Currimbhoy’s plays have not been examined in detail. Currimbhoy’ constant engagement on vital issues informs and impacts his vision of life. He is a unique dramatist who is particular about the contemporary themes. He also stresses on the pathetic condition of the contemporary society in his plays in its true colours.

본 논문은 인도 영어극에서 가장 중요한 목소리 중 하나인 아시프 쿠림 보이의 선택된 희곡들에 나타난 식민주의의 주제와 재현 방식을 고찰한다. 쿠림보이의 희곡들은 식민주의의 개념과 그 다양한 양상을 드러내며, 자본주의가 독립 이후 인도 사회 전반에 미친 영향을 바탕으로 식민주의의 비인간화 행위를 지적한다. 그의 희곡들은 학문적 연구의 대상으로 다루어졌으며, 일부는 지역어로 번역되기도 하였다. 쿠 림보이의 작품은 역사와 정치 등 폭넓은 주제를 포괄하고 있으며, 인종, 계급, 젠더와 같은 문제들이 많은 작품에서 부각되지만 이에 대한 심층적인 논의는 아직 부족하다. 그는 시대의 중대한 문제들에 대한 지속적인 관심을 통해 삶에 대한 독자적인 시각을 형성하며, 동시대적 주제에 대한 뚜렷한 입장을 가진 독특한 극작가로 평가된다. 또한 그는 현대 사회의 비참한 현실을 가감 없이 드러내는 데 주력한다.
