Background: Aloe has traditionally been utilized for various purpose including medicine, cosmetics, food, and religious practices. Objective: This study aims to investigate the traditional perceptions of Aloe's "Cold Nature" and to examine its scientific basis through a comprehensive literature review, ultimately discussing its therapeutic significance. Methods: Data were collected through electronic databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using the keyword “Aloe” along with “history,” “ancient,” “properties,” and “composition.” Results: The literature review revealed that the major components of Aloe—such as polysaccharides and anthraquinones—contribute to the suppression of heat and inflammation, the mitigation of oxidative stress, and the improvement of immune balance, thereby supporting the traditional concept of "Cold Nature". Conclusion: The findings suggest that a deeper understanding of Aloe's "Cold Nature," supported by scientific evidence, may contribute to the development of therapeutic models in the fields of integrative and complementary alternative medicine.

배경: 알로에는 전통적으로 의약⋅미용⋅식품⋅종교 등 다양한 목적으로 활용되어 왔다. 목적: 알로에의 ‘냉 성’ 개념이 전통적으로 어떻게 인식되어 왔는지, 과학적인 근거는 무엇인지 문헌 고찰을 통해 확인하고 치유적인 의의를 토의하고자 한다. 방법: 자료수집은 Web of Science, PubMed, Google scholar 등 전자데이터베이스에서 ‘Aloe’ 키워드와 ‘history’, ‘ancient’, ‘properties’, ‘composition’ 등의 단어를 기반으로 검색하였다. 결과: 문헌고 찰을 통해 확인된 알로에 주요 성분(다당류, 안트라퀴논)은 열⋅염증 억제, 산화 스트레스 완화, 면역 균형 개선에 관여하여 전통적으로 표현되는 ‘냉성’의 개념을 지지하는 것으로 나타났다. 결론: 본 연구를 통해 확인된 알로에의 냉성에 대한 이해 및 과학적 근거는 통합의학⋅보완대체의학 분야에서 알로에를 활용한 치유 모델 개발에 활용될 수 있으리라 기대된다.
