This study examines Mong de Charlotte, Korea’s first musical storytelling restaurant, from the perspective of performance studies. Located within the Charlotte Theater, Mong de Charlotte reinterprets the everyday act of dining as an artistic performance, offering a multisensory experience through a course meal themed around musical content and narrative storytelling. The researcher approaches this space as a form of performance and explores its potential to redefine and expand the boundaries of performing arts. To that end, this paper is grounded in performance theory and the concept of performativity, with particular focus on the sensory experiences of the audience and their participatory actions. Erika Fischer-Lichte’s theory of performativity and the autopoietic feedback loop provide key theoretical frameworks to explain how the audience functions as co-creators of the performance. The study analyses a practical case: the themed dining experience based on the musical . At the beginning of the performance, the storyteller introduces the narrative world and structure of Mong de Charlotte, gradually stimulating the audience’s senses through symbolic tools and props. The performance unfolds as a sensory act mobilizing all five senses—hearing, touch, smell, sight, and taste—thereby inducing deep immersion and performative participation. Through this process, the audience gradually realizes they are part of the performance and adopts the role of co-creator. After the performance, audience members voluntarily generate and share content on social media, participating in the reproduction and dissemination of the experience. This shift transforms the audience’s identity from passive consumers to active participants, contributing to a new mode of spectatorship. The multisensory nature of the performance bridges emotional immersion with physical experience, converting the restaurant into a performative venue. As such, the dining performance aligns with the aesthetics of performance that value process over outcome and blurs the boundary between art and everyday life. This study confirms the possibility of a co-creative spectatorship distinct from conventional audience roles and presents Mong de Charlotte as a viable model for dining as a legitimate performance art. It further suggests that dining performance may foster the growth and sustainability of the Korean performing arts scene by connecting artistic innovation with popular engagement.

본 연구는 국내 최초 뮤지컬 스토리텔링 레스토랑 ‘몽드샬롯’을 공연학적 관점에서 고찰한 사례연구이다. 몽드샬롯은 샤롯데씨어터 내에 조성된 다이닝이라는 일상적 행위를 하나의 예술적 퍼포먼스로 확장한 레스토랑으로 뮤지컬 콘텐츠를 테마로 한 코스메뉴 구성과 스토리텔링을 통해 다감각적 예술 경험을 제공한다. 이에 연구자는 몽드샬롯을 하나의 퍼포먼스로 인식하고 이를 통해 공연예술의 개념을 재정의하고 확장할 가능성을 확인하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 퍼포먼스 이론과 수행성 개념을 이론적 틀로 설정하고 관객의 감각적 경험과 수행 중심의 참여 양상에 주목하였다. 몽드샬롯에서의 전체 공연 과정은 관객의 상상력을 비롯하여 청각, 촉각, 후각, 시각, 그리고 미각의 오감을 총동원하는 공연적 요소를 모두 활용하는 감각적 행위로 구성되며, 이로 인해 관객은 몰입과 수행을 적극적으로 경험하게 된다. 관객은 이러한 수행을 통해 자신이 공연 일부가 되었음을 자각하고 점차 스스로를 공동창작자로 인식하게 된다. 또한, 관객은 공연 체험 이후 SNS에 후기 콘텐츠를 생성하며 공연의 재생산자로 기능함으로써 공연의 확산과 재창조에 자발적으로 참여한다. 공연학적 관점으로 봤을 때, 이는 관객의 정체성을 고객에서 능동적 관객으로 변모시키며 새로운 관객성 형성에 기여한다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 다감각적 경험은 관객의 몰입도를 증대시키고, 레스토랑이라는 비공연 공간을 예술 무대로 전환하는 매개가 되는 것이다. 본 다이닝 퍼포먼스는 관객의 수행성을 기반으로 성립되어 결과보다 과정을 중시하는 퍼포먼스의 미학과도 맞닿아 있으며 일상과 예술의 경계를 해체하는 실천적 사례로 평가될 수 있다. 그 결과 본 연구는 기존의 수동적 관객성과는 구별되는 공동창작자적 관객성의 가능성을 확인하고, 다이닝 퍼포먼스를 하나의 공연예술로 인식하는 계기를 형성하여 국내 공연예술계의 확장 가능성과 제고에 기여할 수 있는 학문적 및 실천적 의의를 지닌다.
