This study examined actors’ emotional-expression processes through the lens of contemporary neuroscience theories of emotion, in order to identify effective approaches for achieving naturalistic emotional performance. The research offers a fresh perspective on how actors approach emotion. Emotions are notoriously difficult to regulate, and direct, forceful techniques often backfire. Yet the ultimate aim of acting is to inhabit the emotional realm, and these very characteristics of emotion can lead performers into mistakes or emotional blocks. Rather than fabricating feelings from the outside, actors must learn to modulate and harness their emotions organically. Classical psychology assumed that human emotions are innate, hardwired responses. In contrast, Lisa Feldman Barrett’s Theory of Constructed Emotion posits that emotions are not universal, preordained reactions but the brain’s on-the-fly constructions—integrating past experiences, bodily sensations, linguistic concepts, and situational context. Moreover, modern neuroscience has shown that emotions arise from evolved neural circuits designed for survival and adaptation. Emotions guide appropriate responses to current situations based on past learning, mediated by neurotransmitters and hormones. For example, when fear is experienced, the amygdala activates the fight-or-flight response-raising heart rate and tensing muscles to prepare the body for danger. Such survival mechanisms also underpin actors’ emotional expression. Accordingly, this study first clarifies the neuroscientific underpinnings of emotion, then, drawing on the Theory of Constructed Emotion, investigates actors’ emotion-generation processes from a brain-science perspective. By doing so, it proposes a scientific approach to training emotional expression in performance-and anticipates that acting pedagogy will increasingly embrace such evidence-based methods. In addition, if these scientific findings are applied to actor training, a more systematic and empirical acting methodology can be established. Therefore, it is necessary to find a new approach for expressing actors' natural emotions based on the emotional theory proposed by modern brain science.

본 연구는 배우의 감정 표현 과정을 현대 뇌과학이 밝혀낸 감정 이론을 통해 살펴봄으로써 자연스러운 감정에 대한 효과적인 접근 방법을 모색했다. 이를 통해 배우의 감정 접근 방법에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시한다. 감정은 조절하기 어렵고, 직접적인 접근 방법은 오히려 역효과를 초래할 수 있다. 하지만, 연기의 최종 목적지는 감정의 영역이며, 이러한 감정의 특성 때문에 배우들은 감정을 표현하는 과정에서 오류에 빠지거나 어려움을 겪을 수 있다. 배우들은 감정을 억지로 만들어 내는 것이 아니라, 자연스럽게 조절하고 활용하는 방법을 익혀야 한다. 고전적 심리학에서는 인간의 감정이 타고난 것이라고 믿어져 왔다. 하지만, 리사 펠드먼 배럿의 구성된 감정 이론에 따르면 인간의 감정은 선천적으로 정해진 보편적 반응이 아니라, 우리의 뇌가 과거 경험, 신체 감각, 언어적 개념, 그리고 상황적 맥락을 통합하여 구성해 낸 결과이다. 또한, 현대 뇌과학은 감정이 생존과 적응을 위해 진화한 신경 회로 시스템의 결과임을 밝혀냈다. 감정은 과거 경험을 바탕으로 현재 상황에 대한 적절한 반응을 유도하며, 이는 신경전달물질과 호르몬 작용을 통해 이루어졌다. 예를 들어, 공포를 느낄 때 편도체가 활성화되어 ‘투쟁-도피’ 반응을 촉진하고, 이는 심박수 증가와 근육 긴장 등의 신체 변화를 일으켜 위험에 대비하게 만든다. 이러한 생존 메커니즘이 배우들의 감정 표현에도 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 현대 뇌과학에서 밝혀낸 감정 이론을 이해하고 구성된 감정 이론에 근거하여 배우의 감정 표현 과정을 뇌과학적으로 고찰했다. 이를 통해 배우의 감정 표현에 대한 과학적 접근 방법을 제시했다. 이 연구를 통해 연기 분야에도 과학적인 접근 방법이 도입될 것으로 기대된다. 더불어 이러한 과학적 발견을 배우 훈련에 적용한다면, 보다 체계적이고 실증적인 연기 방법론을 구축할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 현대 뇌과학이 제시하는 감정 이론에 근거하여 배우의 자연스러운 감정 표현을 위한 새로운 접근 방안을 찾을 필요가 있다.
