This article begins with Jeon Woo-chi (田禹治) and ends with Jeon Woo-chi, but the main text does not solely discuss Jeon Woo-chi. The starting point of this study is the famous anecdote about Jeon Woo-chi included in the Eou Yadam (於于 野談), which involves Jeon Woo-chi ordering a boy to steal peaches from the sky. The core c ontent of t his story is v ery similar to t he magic p erformances that originated in ancient India, were introduced to China, and became popular with Taoist t astes. W hile t his similarity has been n oted i n prev ious s tudies, this research goes beyond viewing it as an interesting case and seeks to explore it as a powerful path for the formation of Taoist imagination unique to East Asian narrative literature. This is because it focuses on the transformation of magic performances into stories, their close combination with Taoist elements, and their eventual solidification as Taoist artifice. The main text of this paper consists of three major stages. First, I examined the close correlation between actual magic performances and Taoist artifice motifs in narrative literature, as well as various manifestations in early Chinese narratives with more abundant data. In this process, I specified the concept and properties of illusion as a branch of Taoist artifice. Next, I examined the reality and trends of Taoist artifice motifs in the narrative literature of the Joseon Dynasty based on this theoretical framework. I analyzed cases that can be designated as illusion by examining Yadams and classical Korean novels, where Taoist motifs are frequently found, to confirm the reality of illusion motifs. Additionally, I investigated the causes and meanings of the varying trends in their use depending on the narrative style. At the end of this discussion, I revisited Jeon Woo-chi and reevaluated his literary historical status and the stories featuring him from the perspective of the narrative tradition using illusion as a subject. The fundamental issue that prompted this study is that although Taoism is frequently identified as a key component of East Asian literary imagination, there is a lack of specific knowledge about its substance, form, and movement within the literary field. Therefore, in this discussion, the layers of Taoist imagination are divided into the world, people, and abilities, with Taoist artifice corresponding to abilities further divided into training to become an immortal, divination techniques, and illusion, which are presented as a theoretical framework. I hope that this will contribute to deepening the understanding of Taoist elements in the literary field in future studies.

이 글은 전우치로 들어가 전우치로 나오지만, 전우치만을 논한 것은 아니다. 논의의 출발점은 『어우야담』에 수록된 전우치의 한 일화, 소위 ‘하늘에서 복숭아 훔쳐오기’ 이야 기이다. 이 이야기의 중심 내용은 고대 인도에서 발생하여 중국에 들어와 도선적 취향이 가미되어 유행했던 환술 공연과 매우 흡사하다. 이는 기존 연구에서도 수차 지적되었던 바인데, 본고에선 이를 흥미로운 일단으로 보는 데서 나아가 동아시아 서사문학 특유의 도선적 상상력이 구성되는 유력한 경로로서 주목하였다. 환술 공연이 이야기로 변환된 사례가 적지 않다는 점, 그 과정은 거개 도선이라는 요소와 밀접하게 결합되어 있으며, 그 결과는 어김없이 도술이라는 형태로 응고된다는 점에 착안한 것이다. 본격적인 논의는 크게 세 단계로 이루어져 있다. 먼저 자료가 보다 풍부한 중국의 초 기 서사류를 대상으로, 실제 연행되었던 환술 공연과 서사문학 속 도술 화소 간의 긴밀 한 상관관계 및 다양한 발현 양상을 점검하며 도술의 한 갈래로서 환술의 개념과 속성을 구체화하였다. 이어 이를 이론적 토대로 삼아 조선시대 서사문학 속 환술 모티프의 실제 와 동향을 검토하였다. 도술 소재가 빈출하는 야담과 한글소설을 대상으로 환술로 지목 할 수 있는 사례를 톺아보며 환술 모티프의 지평을 확인하는 한편, 그 활용에 있어 갈래 에 따라 상이한 추이가 나타나는 데 대하여 그 저변과 의미를 고구해본 것이다. 그리고 이러한 논의의 끝에 전우치를 다시 호명함으로써 환술을 소재로 한 서사적 전통의 시좌에서 전우치와 그를 주인공으로 한 이야기의 문학사적 위상을 짚었다. 이 연구를 기획한 근본적인 문제의식은 동아시아의 문학적 상상력을 구성하는 주요 질료로서 ‘도선’이 늘상 지목되지만 기실 그 실체는 물론 문학 현장에서의 양태와 운동 성에 대해 여전히 구체적인 접근이 미비하다는 데 있다. 이에 이번 논의를 진행하며 도 선적 상상력의 층위를 세계, 인물, 능력 등으로 구분하고, 능력에 해당하는 도술을 다시 신선술, 술수지학, 환술 등으로 분광하여 분석의 틀을 마련하였다. 이것이 차후 문학 영 역에서 도선적 요소를 해상도 높게 이해하는 데 일조할 수 있길 기대한다.
