This study investigates why free translation is frequently employed in Japanese subtitles of Korean films, even when literal translation is possible. Despite the shared SOV syntactic structure of both languages, free translation strategies-omission, addition, and modification-are commonly used. This research analyzes the Japanese subtitles of 20th Century Girl through a comparative examination of the original Korean dialogue, its literal translation, and the official Japanese subtitles. Omission removes repetitive expressions, interjections, and emphatic elements that may appear excessive to Japanese audiences, aligning with their linguistic preference for conciseness. Addition enhances clarity by inserting particles, conjunctions, and demonstratives, ensuring coherence. Modification adjusts honorifics, forms of address, and expressions to align with Japanese discourse norms, maintaining naturalness and social appropriateness. Beyond linguistic transformation, these strategies facilitate efficient subtitle processing within screen–time constraints. Sociocultural differences also influence translation practices. Japanese subtitles often add proper nouns or demonstratives to compensate for Korean’s reliance on contextual cues. Differences in honorifics and expressions of social intimacy require careful adaptation to preserve cultural nuances. Ultimately, subtitle translation is not just a linguistic conversion but a process of meaning negotiation shaped by linguistic and cultural factors. This study highlights its role in intercultural communication, demonstrating how translation choices influence audience perception and understanding.

한국어와 일본어는 유사한 어순을 가지지만 실제 자막 번역에서는 직역이 아닌 다양한 의역 전략이 활용된다. 본 논문에서는 이를 규명하기 위해 넷플릭스 영화 『20세기 소녀』의 일본어 자막을 대상으로 원문 대사, 직역, 실제 자막을 비교･분석하고 양국의 사회언어적 요인과 관련지어 고찰하였다. 분석 결과, 의역은 ‘생략’, ‘추가’, ‘변화’의 세 가지 유형으로 분류되어 언어정 보를 보충하거나 등장 인물의 관계나 사회적 지위에 맞게 호칭과 경어를 조정하는 등 일본어 담화 규범에 맞게 표현을 수정하는 전략이 관찰되었다. 이러한 의역 방식은 시청자가 제한된 시간 내에 자막을 직관적으로 이해할 수 있도록 돕는 역 할을 한다. 또한, 한국어와 일본어의 사회문화적 차이도 의역 방식에 영향을 미쳤다. 한국어는 대명사를 최소화하고 맥락을 통해 의미를 전달하는 경향이 강하지 만, 일본어 자막에서는 명확성을 위해 고유명사나 지시어를 추가하는 경우가 많았다. 친소 및 상하 관계에 따른 경어 사용 방식도 양국간의 사회언어문화적 배경을 반영한 조정이 이루어지는 것을 확인하였다. 결론적으로, 자막 번역은 단순한 직역이 아니라 언어･문화적 요소를 반영한 복 합적 의미 조정 과정임이 밝혀졌다. 이를 통해 자막 번역이 단순한 텍스트 변환을 넘어 문화 간 커뮤니케이션의 중요한 매개체로 기능함을 확인할 수 있었다.
