This study examines Jeong Ji-Yong’s poetry during the Liberation Period, which has often been marginalized in Korean literary discourse due to its perceived quantitative scarcity and qualitative decline. Previous research has largely characterized this phase as a regression, focusing on his use of the 4.4 metrical form in Korean classical poetry and themes of petit-bourgeois everyday life. However, from the perspective of national literature and people’s identity, these elements can be understood as a conscious strategy of popularization rather than artistic deterioration. Jeong’s self-identification as a “petit-bourgeois man of letters” and a member of the “powerless intellectual petit bourgeois class” demonstrates his deliberate engagement with contemporary realities and his effort to cultivate a new literary consciousness. Furthermore, the formal experimentation evident in Sasajo O-su (Five Poems in the 4.4 metrical form in Korean classical poetry), when considered alongside contemporary reflections such as those of Yu Chi-Hwan, can be interpreted as a variation of illustration poetry. Ultimately, Jeong Ji-Yong’s work during this period should be reevaluated as a project of political and aesthetic expansion, grounded in people’s identity and directed toward the pursuit of literary renewal.

그동안 정지용 시 세계의 변모 과정은 모더니즘 시, 종교시, 산수시 등으로 한정해서 고찰되어왔다. 특히 해방기 정지용의 시의 고찰은 그 양적 빈곤과 질 적 퇴보라는 관점으로 취급되어 주요 논제가 되기에는 역부족이었다. 후기 정 지용 시가 언급되더라도, 해방 직후와 보도연맹 시기의 시편들의 특징을 두고 4·4조의 형식이나 ‘소시민적 일상시’라는 관점에서 시의 퇴보를 논하고 있는 경 우가 대다수였다. 그러나 ‘인민성’을 중심으로 한 민족문학의 관점에서는 4·4조 의 형식은 대중화를 위한 형식적 모험이라 평가할 수 있다. 그러므로 이 시기의 시는 퇴보가 아니라 ‘인민성’을 기반으로 한 정치적 확산의 기획이었다고 격상 해서 판단할 만하다. 아울러 정지용은 해방기 자기 주체를 “소시민 문학인”, “무력한 인테리 소시민층”이라고 명명해왔으며, 이런 주체관을 통해 현실과 새 로운 대결 의식을 마련하려는 의지를 표명했다고 전망해 볼 수 있겠다. 이는 당 대 유치환의 회고를 고려해보면, ｢四四-五首｣의 형식적 모험 역시 삽화시의 한 양식으로 판명된다. 즉 해방기 정지용은 주어진 현실에서 분류되지 않는 새 로운 문학적 이상향을 위해 자기 갱신을 담보로 전진해나간 시인이라 평가할 수 있다.
