In response to rapid social and technological changes and growing sustainability demands, fashion design increasingly requires creative, future-oriented approaches. This study explores how future-oriented design methodologies−Futures Thinking, Speculative Design, and Design for X−can be applied to the sustainable fashion design process through literature review and case analysis. It proposes a structured framework for integrating these methodologies into four key design stages: problem definition, concept development, prototyping, and evaluation/application. In the problem definition stage, Futures Thinking is employed to predict long-term societal and environmental changes and create future scenarios that help formulate long-term strategies reflecting the sustainable use of resources and anticipating future needs. In the concept development stage, Speculative Design is applied to develop innovative and experimental thinking, focusing on future consumer experiences and social innovation. During the prototyping stage, Design for X is utilized to enhance environmental responsibility through resource-efficient and sustainability-driven prototype production. Finally, in the evaluation and application stage, Futures Thinking and Design for X are integrated to ensure that the final product adapt to future environmental changes and evolving societal demands, while developing sustainable improvement strategies. This integrated approach introduces a new design methodology that offers a framework for creative problem-solving and sustainability strategies in the fashion design process, addressing the complex future challenges facing fashion designers while contributing to the development of sustainable design strategies. The results of the study provide a theoretical framework that enhances sustainability in fashion design and offers a practical and educational application of future-oriented design strategies.

급변하는 사회･기술적 변화와 지속 가능성에 대한 요구는 패션 디자인에서 창의적 문제 해결과 미래 지향 적 접근의 필요성을 강조하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 지속 가능한 패션 디자인을 위한 미래적 사고, 사변적 디자인, X를 위한 디자인 등의 대표적인 미래적 디자인 방법론의 특성을 탐구하고, 이를 패션 디자인의 프로 세스에 적용할 수 있는 가능성을 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 문헌 연구와 사례 분석을 통해 각 방법론의 핵심 특성과 프로세스 활동을 유형화하고, 패션 디자인의 고유한 특성을 반영하여 이를 디자인 프로세스의 4단계 (문제 정의, 콘셉트 개발, 프로토타이핑, 평가 및 적용)에 적용할 수 있는지를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 문제 정의 단계에서는 미래적 사고를 활용해 장기적 환경 변화와 사회적 요구를 반영한 미래 시나리오를 구축하고 지속 가능한 디자인 전략을 수립할 수 있다. 둘째, 콘셉트 개발 단계에서는 사변적 디자인이 비판적 상상력과 실험적 사고를 촉진하며, 미래 소비자 경험과 사회적 혁신을 반영한 창의적 디자인 개발을 지원한 다. 셋째, 프로토타이핑 단계에서는 X를 위한 디자인을 적용하여 자원 효율성과 지속 가능성을 고려한 목표 설정 및 프로토타입을 제작함으로써 디자인의 환경적 책임을 강화할 수 있다. 넷째, 평가 및 적용 단계에서는 미래적 사고와 X를 위한 디자인 방법을 결합하여 최종 제품이 미래 환경 변화와 사회적 요구에 적응할 수 있도록 지속 가능한 개선 전략을 도출한다. 본 연구는 패션 디자인 프로세스에서 미래 문제에 대응하기 위해 창의적 문제 해결과 지속 가능성 전략 수립이 가능한 방법론적 틀을 제시하며, 실무 및 교육 현장에서 미래 지향적 디자인 전략을 적용할 수 있는 이론적 프레임워크를 제공한다. 이를 통해 패션 디자이너가 복잡한 미래 문제를 선제적으로 해결하고, 지속 가능한 패션 산업을 구축하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
