This study examines the process and causes of the arrest of Odo, the half-brother of William the Conqueror and the Bishop of Bayeux. By so doing, this study aims to examine the political features of the Norman dynasty in the eleventh century. While various primary sources point out the rebellion against William and ambitions for the papacy as reasons for Odo’s arrest, they fail to provide a satisfactory explanation on the event. This paper put an emphasis on the need to understand Odo’s arrest within the broader context of the political circumstance in England and Normandy in the early 1080s and the political features of the reign of William the Conqueror. Even before becoming King of England, William, as Duke of Normandy, had relied heavily on his close associates and family members. However, William also experienced challenges from some of them, including his son Robert Curthose, which weakened his authority. By overcoming these challenges, he strengthened his authority. Odo’s arrest also shows these features of the rule of William. While officially emphasizing Odo’s ambitions, it actually demonstrates the crisis of weakened authority of William due to conflicts in family and how William overcame the crisis. Therefore, through analyzing the cause and background of Odo’s arrest, this study examines William’s ruling methods and skills, and demonstrates the significance of ‘family’ in understanding medieval kingship.

본 연구는 정복왕 윌리엄의 이복동생이자 바이외 주교였던 오도의 체포 과정 과 원인을 분석하였으며, 이를 통해 노르만 왕조 초기의 정치적 특징을 분석하 고자 하였다. 여러 사료들은 윌리엄에 대한 반역, 교황직에 대한 야망 등을 오 도 체포의 원인으로 지목하지만, 오도의 체포에 대한 만족스러운 설명을 제공하 지는 못했다. 본 논문은 오도의 체포를 1080년대 초의 잉글랜드와 노르망디의 정치적 상황과 정복왕 윌리엄의 통치 기술이라는 더 넓은 맥락에서 이해할 필 요성이 있음을 강조하였다. 윌리엄은 잉글랜드 왕이 되기 전 노르망디 공작 때 부터 측근들과 가문의 사람들을 중용하였다. 그러나 아들인 로버트 커토즈를 비 롯한 여러 친족들이 자신의 권위에 도전하는 것을 겪기도 하였으며, 이를 극복 하면서 자신의 권위를 강화하는 모습을 보였다. 오도의 체포 역시 이러한 윌리 엄의 통치 특징을 보여주며, 공식적으로는 오도의 교황직 야망과 세속적 야망 등이 강조되었다. 그러나 실제로는 가족 내 갈등으로 인해 약화된 윌리엄의 권 위의 위기와 이를 극복하는 모습을 보였다. 즉, 오도의 체포 원인 및 배경 분석 을 통해 본 연구는 윌리엄의 통치 방식을 분석했으며, 동시에 중세의 왕권 이해 에서 가족의 중요성을 보여주었다.
