This study examines the overseas divestment strategy of South Korean auto parts manufacturers during the COVID-19 pandemic, based on the framework of real options theory. Real options theory explains firms' investment and strategic decisions through the concepts of option value and uncertainty, while it provides a theoretical framework for understanding business divestment decisions. In real options theory, operational flexibility and its value are closely tied to uncertainty. The sources of uncertainty in prior real options theory literature typically arise from crises or difficulties limited to a certain country or industry. However, the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across virtually all sectors provided a natural experimental setting for examining the value of firm investments and divestment strategies. This study analyzes divestment strategies during the pandemic by focusing on transaction partner dependence, domestic market dependence, and main product dependence among automotive parts manufacturers. The logistic regression analysis using data from 2020 and 2021 revealed that companies highly dependent on major customers and domestic markets were more likely to maintain their overseas subsidiaries rather than divest. However, the hypothesis regarding main product dependence was not supported by the empirical analysis. This study is distinctive from previous research in three ways: it addresses a huge uncertainty — such as the COVID-19 pandemic — which was not covered by prior foreign divestment studies using real options theory, empirically demonstrates that firms' foreign divestment strategies are influenced by inter-firm relationships, and explores the possibility of exports serving as a substitute option for overseas subsidiaries in the context of international geographic diversification. Finally, based on these empirical findings, the implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

본 연구는 실물 옵션 이론의 논리를 바탕으로 COVID-19 팬데믹 위기 속 한국 자동차 부품 제조 업체들의 해외 법인 철수 문제를 고찰했다. 기업의 투자와 전략적 결정을 옵션적 가치와 불확실성을 바탕으로 설명하는 실물 옵션 이론은, 한편으로 기업의 사업이나 법인 철수 행위에 대해서도 이론적 설명을 제공한다. 실물 옵션 이론에서 설명하는 실물 투자를 통한 운영적 유연성과 옵션 가치는 불 확실성과 깊은 연관이 있다. 기존 실물 옵션 이론에서는 이러한 불확실성의 근원이 주로 특정 국가나 특정 산업에서 발생하는 위기나 어려움에 국한되어 있다. COVID-19 팬데믹은 전 세계적으로 거의 모든 분야에 영향을 주었기 때문에 기업의 투자가 갖는 가치와 기 업의 철수 전략을 확인해 볼 수 있는 자연적인 실험 환경을 제공하였다. 본 연구에서는 한국 자동차 부품 제조 업체의 주요 구매자에 대한 의존도, 내수 시장 의존도, 주력 제품 의존도를 바탕으로 COVID-19 팬데믹 상황 속에서 기업의 철수 전략을 확인했다. 2020년 과 2021년의 자동차 부품 제조 업체 해외 법인 철수 여부를 로지스틱 회귀 분석을 통해 살펴본 결과, 기업의 주요 구매자에 대한 의존 도가 높을수록, 기업의 내수시장 의존도가 높을수록, 기업이 해외 법인을 철수하지 않고 유지할 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 한 편, 기업의 주력 제품 의존도와 관련하여서는 연구에서 도출한 가설이 채택되지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 기존 실물 옵션 이 론 기반 기업의 해외 철수 연구가 다루지 못했던 범위의 불확실성을 다루고, 기업의 해외 철수 전략이 다른 기업과의 관계에 영향을 받음을 실증했다는 점, 해외 지리적 다각화와 관련하여 수출이 해외 법인을 대체하는 옵션이 될 수 있음을 고찰했다는 점에서 선행 연 구와 차별점을 갖는다. 마지막으로, 이 같은 실증 분석 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 의의와 시사점, 한계점과 후속 연구에 대해 논의했다.
