This study sheds light on the multimedia performance group Dumb Type (1984-), which was founded in the 1980s as a university theater troupe in Kyoto, Japan, and has carried out diverse works regardless of media and expressive forms. This study aims to establish the background that allowed Dumb Type to establish the genre of ‘multimedia performance’ from the mid-1980s to the early-to-mid 1990s, by locating it on the boundary between theater and multimedia performance, and to look back on the history of multimedia performance that fused the Angura theater movement, a modern Japanese theater movement that has continued since the 1960s, and multimedia performance, thereby establishing an art historical foundation. Furthermore, this study aims to analyze and outline the multimedia performance works of Dumb Type by period. Dumb Type, which began as the theater troupe in the Kyoto City University of Arts in 1984, attempted to establish its identity through post-theatrical experiments, and attempted to propose a critical perspective on technological civilization and consumer society through its works, breaking away from the identity of an amateur university theater troupe. After the AIDS coming out of its central member, Teiji Furuhashi, the group attempted to naively portray sexual minorities and the social exclusion and discrimination they experienced through its works, and after Furuhashi’s death, the group attempted to present a more detailed media technology strategy and a new digital aesthetic. This study aims to provide a foundation for an in-depth understanding of their multimedia performance works by providing a comprehensive overview of their creative activities spanning over the past 20 years.47)

본 연구는 1980년대 일본 교토의 대학생 연극 극단을 모체로 창단되어 매체와 표 현 양식에 구애받지 않고 다양한 작품 활동을 전개해 온 멀티미디어 퍼포먼스 그룹 덤 타입(Dumb Type, 1984-)을 조명한다. 덤타입이 1980년대 중반부터 1990년대 초 중반에 걸쳐 ’멀티미디어 퍼포먼스‘라는 장르를 확립할 수 있었던 배경을 연극과 멀티 미디어 퍼포먼스의 경계에 위치시키고 1960년대부터 이어져 온 일본 현대 연극 사조 인 앙그라 소극장 운동과 다매체가 융합된 멀티미디어 퍼포먼스의 역사를 되짚어 보 고자 한다. 나아가 덤타입의 멀티미디어 퍼포먼스 작품을 시기별로 분석하여 개괄한다. 덤타입 은 1984년 교토시립예술대학의 극단 좌 카르마를 모체로 탈연극적인 실험을 통하여 정체성을 확립하고자 하였고, 아마추어 대학 극단의 정체성에서 벗어나 기술문명과 소비사회에 대한 비판적 시선을 작품을 통해 제안하고자 하였다. 중심 멤버인 후루하 시 테이지의 에이즈 커밍아웃 이후 성 소수자와 이들이 겪는 사회적 배제, 차별을 작 품을 통해 나이브하게 그려내고자 하였으며 후루하시 사후에는 한층 세분화된 미디어 테크놀로지 전략을 내세우며 새로운 디지털 미학을 선보이고자 하였다. 본 연구는 그들의 작품 20여 년에 걸친 그들의 작품 활동을 전반적으로 개괄함으로 써 이들의 멀티미디어 퍼포먼스 작품을 심도 있게 이해할 수 있는 기틀을 마련하는 것 을 목표로 한다.
