All successions to the throne in the early Joseon Dynasty from Taejo to Sejong, take place in the form of a abdication, In this article, we analyzed the reasons specified in abdication message and enthronement message in the early Joseon Dynasty from Taejo to Sejong. As a result, in the message, the ‘confucian ideology’ was usually very emphasized as the reason for the abdication and enthronement. In the enthronement message of Taejo, the support of the heaven and human hearts is presented as the main reason for the enthronement. In Taejo's abdication message, it is stated that the crown prince is the primogeniture. In Jeongjong's abdication message and enthronement message and Taejong's enthronement message, the 'distinction between legitimate and illegitimate lines of descent' based on the confucian ideology of jongbeop(agnatic rincile) is presented as the main reason for the throne. Taejong's abdication message suggest that the crown prince has filial piety and virtue. In Sejong's enthronement message, he was succeeded by the order of the father, but it is stipulated that all systems follow the laws established by Taejo and Taejong. In the Joseon Dynasty, these thoughts presented in the abdication message and enthronement message are not just a simple declaration, but are reflected in reality, and have a profound influence on the transformation of the Joseon Dynasty into a confucian state.

태조에서 세종에 이르는 조선 초기의 왕위 계승은 모두 선위의 형태, 즉 국왕이 자의나 타의에 의해서 재위시에 다른 사람에게 국왕의 자리를 물려주는 방식으로 이루어진다. 이 글에서는 태조에서 세종에 이르는 조선 초기 역대 국 왕의 선위 및 즉위 교서에 명시되어 있는 그 사유에 대해 분석해 보았다. 그 결과 교서에서는 선위 및 즉위의 사유로 대개 ‘유교 이념’이 매우 강조되고 있 었다. 고려 공민왕의 왕비인 대비 안씨(安氏)의 교지에 의거하여, 신하들의 추 대로 즉위한 태조의 즉위 교서에서는, 천명과 인심의 지지가 주된 즉위 사유로 제시된다. 태조의 선위 교서에서는 자신이 나이 들어 건강이 좋지 못한데 세자 가 적장자로 효성과 덕성을 갖추어서 선위한다고 그 사유가 명시된다. 정종의 즉위 및 선위 교서, 그리고 태종의 즉위 교서에서는 유교적 종법 사상에 의거 한 ‘적서의 구분’이 주된 사유로 제시된다. 태종의 선위 교서에서는 세자가 총 명하고 공손하며, 동시에 효성과 덕성을 갖추어 왕위에 오르기에 합당하므로 선위한다고 그 사유가 제시된다. 세종의 즉위 교서에서는 부왕의 명으로 자신 이 계승하게 되었으나, 일체의 제도는 태조와 부왕 태종이 이루어 놓은 법도를 따른다고 명시된다. 조선 초기에 국왕의 선위 및 즉위 교서에서 제시된 이러한 사유는 단순한 선언에 그치지 않고 현실에 반영되어, 조선왕조가 유교 국가로 변화해 나가는 데에 지대한 영향을 미치게 된다.
