Historical Changes of the Existence and Role of Baecheobjang in the Late Joseon Dynasty - Focusing on the analysis of Uigwe -
Baecheopjang was designated as a national intangible heritage by the National Heritage Administration. During the Joseon Dynasty, they were a craftsmen who decorated the court’s patings, but it is now defined as being in charge of five fields: picture frame, folding screens, scrolls, book making , and old painting restoration. This paper attempts to clarify the historical change of the existence and role of Baecheopjang in the Joseon Dynasty. To this end, all the number of craftsmen recorded in Uigwe from the 17th century to the early 20th century was studied. Among them, by analyzing the activity status of Baecheopjang, who had served as a guide for more than 20 years, the change in the name or role of craftmen by period, and the family relationship were revealed. As a result, what I learned is as follows First of all, Baecheopjang was stipulated in laws such as Daejeon Tongpyeon(1785) and Daejeon Hoetong(1865) from Gyeongguk Daejeon(1485). They were organized in Gongjo, Dohwaseo, and Sanguiwon, and there were 2, 2, and 4 people in each government office. In the 17th century, there were a total of 41 people who served as Byeongpungjang(folding screens’s maker) or Gyomyeong’s maker. Some of them were Kim Soo-myung (activated 1600∼1610), Lee Deok-ryong (1605∼1630), Lee Ha-bok (1609∼1630), Kim Deok-nam (1627∼1652), Na Eung-song (1632∼1667), Park Seon-seon (1659∼1694), and Lim Yi-dal (1673∼1694). In the 18th century, there were a total of 32 Baecheopjang, and most of the names were Byeongpungjang. Among them are Im Sa-dal (1684∼1720), Im Se-man (1705∼1736), Jeong-Bong (1696∼1725), Choi Yi-seok (1696∼1756), Im Woo-chun (1752∼1805), and Kang Deok-ju (1776∼1805). In particular, from Im Yi-dal at the end of the 17th century to Im Woo-chun in the early 19th century, the craftsmen of the Im family took the lead in this field for 130 years. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, there were only five people in total. Among them are Kim Chi-deok (1875∼1891), Yoo Jae-ho (1892∼1904), Shin Soo-hyuk (1892∼1900), and Ko Jin-seung (1899∼1907). Although they were active for a short period of time, they performed various roles such as Baechupjang, Byeongpungjang, Book Maker, Angryeonjang, and Hogabjang.
