The purpose of this study is to study the efficient operation of the social responsibility activities of the postal service to enhance the positive image of the Korea Post and further strengthen the improvement of public services. The results of the study are as follows. First, the Korea Post must pursue two conflicting goals, the original public service goal and the profitability goal, at the same time. Second, the budget for implementing social responsibility activities must be ‘secured more stably.’ Third, a strategic organization that will lead the company-wide, integrated social responsibility activities at the Korea Post level must be formed to oversee CSR work. Fourth, the social responsibility activity brand of the postal service must be maximized. Fifth, as the Korea Post has secured a nationwide network, it will be able to utilize the human and material networks as more efficient infrastructure. In order to simultaneously achieve the two goals of being a state-owned enterprise and securing a stable growth and profit base through the operation of the postal service, the public role of the Korea Post can be compressed into discovering and expanding public interest-type profit-making businesses and performing social responsibility management activities. The direction of the Korea Post's social responsibility activities presented through this study was recognized as an essential factor for sustainable management, and provided important practical implications for enhancing the role theory of the Korea Post, a national institution, and suggesting strategic implementation plans. In addition, there is a difference in that it has been extended to research related to social responsibility activities of the Korea Post and it is theoretically significant in that it subdivides the existing types of public role activities and social contribution activities into four dimensions of corporate social responsibility activities and environmental responsibility activities

본 연구의 목적은 우정사업본부의 사회적 책임활동으로 긍정적 이미지를 제고하고 더 나아가 대국민 서비스 개선을 강화하는 우정사업의 사회적 책임활동의 효율적 운영 방안을 연구한다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우정사업본부는 본래의 공공성 목표와 수익성 목표라는 서로 상충되는 두 가지 목표를 동시에 추구해야 한다는 점이다. 둘째, 사회적 책임활동을 실행하기 위한 ‘예산이 좀 더 안정적으로 확보’되 어야 한다는 것이다. 셋째, 우정사업본부 차원의 전사적, 통합적 사회적 책임활동을 이끌 전략적 조직을 구성하여 CSR 업무를 총괄해야 한다. 넷째, 우정사업의 사회적 책임활동 브랜드 극대화가 필요하다. 다섯째, 우정사업본부가 전국적 네트워크를 확보하고 있는 만큼 인적· 물적 네트워크를 보다 효율적인 인프라로 이용할 수 있을 것이다. 국영기업이라는 입장과 우정사업 운영을 통한 안정적인 성장 및 수익기반 확보가 필요하다는 두 가지 목적을 동시에 달성하기 위해서 우정사업본부의 공적역할은 공익형 수익사업 발굴·확대와 사회적 책임경영 활동 수행으로 압축될 수 있다. 이번 연구를 통해 제시되는 우정사업본부의 사회적 책임활동 방향은 지속경영을 위한 필수적인 요인으로 인식하고 국가기관인 우정사업본 부의 역할론 제고와 전략적인 실행 방안 제시에 중요한 실무적인 시사점을 제공하였다. 그리고 국가기관인 우정사업본부의 사회적 책임 활동과 관련된 연구로 확장하였다는 차별점을 지니고 있으며, 기존 공적역할 활동과 사회공헌 활동으로 이분화 되어 있는 유형을 사회적 책임 활동의 4가지 차원과 환경적 책임 활동으로 세분화하였다는 측면에서 이론적으로 의의가 있다.
