This study aimed to analyze the decision-making process of tourists regarding sustainable tourism. The theoretical background explored the concept of sustainable tourism and related research on the tourist decision-making process. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 tourists selected using the theoretical sampling method. The analysis was conducted using the grounded theory method process outlined by Birk and Mills (2015). During initial coding, 13 categories and 27 subcategories were identified. During intermediate coding, relationships between the categories were organized using Strauss and Corbin's (1998) paradigm model as follows: The phenomenon—difficulty in practicing sustainable tourism—was influenced by personal and social factors within the unique context of travel. The action/interaction were identified as avoidance, acceptance, and exploration, influenced by personal experiences and social group affiliations. As the consequences, a new value system for sustainable tourism emerged. During advanced coding, an integrated grounded theory was developed, outlining the establishment of a belief system, compromise and adaptation, accumulation of experience, and reconstruction of the belief system. In conclusion, the sustainable tourism decision-making process involves: 1) recognizing its importance through structural and relational interactions, 2) addressing cognitive-behavioral discrepancies influenced by social alienation and the unique aspects of travel, and 3) adopting integrated coping behaviors. Overall, this process is cumulative and cyclical. Based on these findings, the study suggests adopting a community-based approach to sustainable tourism, enhancing institutional support, and developing strategies for linking tourism with external sectors.

본 연구는 지속가능한 관광에 대한 관광자의 관광의사결정과정을 심층적으로 이해하고 분석하는 데에 목 적을 두었다. 이를 위하여 이론적 배경에서는 지속가능한 관광과 관광의사결정과정에 대한 개념과 관련 연 구에 대해 논의하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 인식-실천-대응을 기준으로 하는 연구문제를 설정하였다. 자료수집 은 12명의 관광자를 대상으로 심층면접법을 적용하여 이루어졌으며, Birk and Mills(2015)가 제시한 근거 이론법의 분석절차를 적용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과, 관광자의 지속가능한 관광의사결정과정은 구조적, 관 계적 상호작용을 통한 요구 인식, 사회적 괴리와 여행활동의 특수성이 작용하는 인지행동불일치, 일상과 관 광, 개인적 및 사회적 요소가 복합적으로 작용하는 대처행동, 축적적으로 이루어지는 순환적 과정이라는 점 을 도출하였다. 본 연구는 지속가능한 관광 연구에서 실질적 주체인 관광자에 초점을 맞추어 의사결정과정 에 대한 통합적인 근거이론을 제시하였다는 점에 의의가 있다. 이를 바탕으로 지속가능한 관광에 대한 커뮤 니티적 접근, 제도적 지원 강화, 관광 외부영역과의 연계 전략 등을 실무적 시사점으로 제시하였다.
