This study qualitatively analyzes the graduate school experiences of Chinese STEM international students, aiming to identify the key factors influencing their cultural and academic adaptation and contribute to the development of more effective support policies for international students. Based on acculturation theory, the study examines the cultural and academic adaptation experiences of five Chinese STEM graduate students through in-depth interviews, focusing on their coping strategies for acculturative stress. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis to categorize key themes. The findings revealed that the cultural adaptation experiences of Chinese STEM graduate students can be broadly categorized into “complex challenges in cultural adaptation” and “coping with acculturative stress.” The challenges were influenced by external factors (e.g., language barriers, laboratory culture) and internal factors (e.g., academic stress, psychological burden). The students employed coping strategies such as “flexible responses to cultural differences,” “positive utilization of interpersonal relationships,” and “active approaches to knowledge acquisition and expansion” to overcome these difficulties. This study provides practical insights for supporting the successful adaptation of international graduate students and serves as foundational data for the development of policies and the creation of multicultural research environments.

본 연구는 이공계 중국인 유학생들의 대학원 생활을 질적으로 분석하여 그들의 문화 적응과 학업적응의 핵심 요소를 파악하고, 보다 효과적인 유학생 지원 정책을 수립하 는 데 기여하고자 한다. 본 연구는 문화적응 이론을 바탕으로 심층 인터뷰를 통해 5명 의 이공계 중국 유학생들의 대학원 생활 중 문화적응 및 학업적응 경험을 고찰하고, 문 화적응 스트레스에 대한 대처 양상을 분석하였다. 수집된 자료는 질적 분석 방법인 주 제 분석 과정을 거쳐 범주를 구성하였다. 연구 결과, 이공계 중국인 대학원생들의 문화 적응 경험은 크게 “문화적응에서의 복합적 어려움”과 “문화적응 스트레스에 대한 대처” 로 나눌 수 있었다. 문화적응의 어려움은 외적 요인(언어 장벽, 연구실 문화 등)과 내적 요인(학업 스트레스, 심리적 부담 등)으로 구분되었으며, 학생들은 “문화에 대한 유연 한 대처”, “주변 관계의 긍정적 활용”, “지식 습득과 확장을 위한 적극적 대처” 등의 전략 을 통해 이를 극복하고자 했다. 본 연구는 외국인 유학생의 성공적인 대학원 생활 적응 을 위한 실질적인 시사점을 제시하며, 향후 유학생 지원 정책 및 다문화 연구 환경 조성 을 위한 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다
