In 2024, the Korean writer Han Kang was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Through her meticulously crafted and poetic narratives, Han Kang offers a penetrating portrayal of individual vulnerability amid domestic oppression and state violence. In works such as The Vegetarian, White, and Human Acts, she illuminates the possibility of renewal even in the depths of hardship—an aesthetic endeavor encapsulated by the maxim, “Having endured winter, one rejoices in spring.” By subtly transforming despair into latent hope, her writing enriches the narrative tradition of modern Korean literature. Han Kang’s creative universe illustrates contemporary Korean literature’s close engagement with pressing social issues—including gender equality, ecological crises, and social diversity—revealing how literary discourse can actively respond to societal challenges. Today, Korean literature’s global dissemination across multiple media platforms transcends regional boundaries and resonates broadly within world literature, foregrounding a nuanced tension between national identity and cosmopolitan reach. Han Kang’s Nobel Prize signals a decisive turning point: her achievement heralds the evolution of Korean literature from a “national literature” to a “world literature,” and further points the way for East Asian literary traditions to redefine their place in the global cultural landscape.
