This study attempts to examine the characteristics of photography, the medium used in Sophie Calle's work. In particular, she analyzes the works that used photography as a major medium in her work. First, the appearance of photography proceeds by accepting the theory of postmodernism in the 1960s. To find out the characteristics of photographic media, we examine the opinions of theorists on the function of photography as evidence in Sophie Calle's work. Furthermore, it creates her own unique world of work through the practice of conceptual artists using photography and the opinions of theorists on Sophie calle's work in the genealogy of photography. In addition, through the work of Sophie calle, we understand various aspects of postmodern art and examine the role of Sophie Calle in it. With this, this study is expected to expand the direction of comparative research on the relationship and differentiation of Sophie Calle's photography project with contemporary art.

본 연구는 소피 칼(Sophie Calle)이 작품에 사용한 매체인 사진의 특성을 고찰하고자 한다. 특히 그녀의 작품에서 사진을 주요 매체로 사용한 작품들을 분석한다. 먼저 사진의 등장은 1960년대 포스트 모더니즘(Postmodernism) 이론을 수용하며 진행된다. 사진 매체의 특성을 알아보기 위해 소피 칼의 작품에서 나타난 사진의 증거로서의 기능에 대한 이론가들의 견해를 살펴본다. 나아가 사진을 활용한 개념미술가들의 실천과 사진의 계보 속에 등장하는 소피 칼의 작품에 대한 이론가들의 견해를 통해 그녀만의 특유의 작품세계를 창조한다. 또한 소피 칼의 작품을 통해서 포스트모더니즘 미술의 여러 단면을 이해하고 그 안에서 소피 칼의 역할을 고찰한다. 이로써 이 연구는 소피 칼의 사진 프로젝트가 동시대 미술과의 연관성과 차별성에 대한 비교 연구의 방향을 확장시켜 나갈 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
