In 2017, Pear Therapeutics (Pear), the developer of reSET, the first digital therapeutic (DTx) approved by the US FDA, declared bankruptcy in May 2023. This has raised concerns in the DTx market. This study examines the causes of Pear’s bankruptcy and explores strategies for DTx growth. The methodology includes extracting domestic news articles from BIG KINDS, performing network and association keyword analysis embedded in BIG KINDS, and applying content analysis using Taguette. The study identifies five factors for Pear’s bankruptcy: lack of physician prescriptions, patient adaptation challenges, insurance coverage limitations, business model constraints, and a standalone strategy. For the growth for DTx industry, five strategies are recommended: building trust, increasing acceptance/usage rates, regulatory/institutional improvements, business model innovation, and creating a cooperative ecosystem. This study proposes a research methodology combining BIG KINDS analysis and content analysis, and the findings can help DTx companies with environmental analysis and strategy development, and can also serve as foundational data for policy establishment to promote and revitalize the DTx industry.

2017년 세계 최초로 미국 FDA의 승인을 받은 디지털 치료제(DTx)인 리셋(reSET)을 개발한 Pear Therapeutics(이 하 ‘Pear’)가 2023년 5월 파산을 선언하면서, DTx 시장의 위기감은 고조되고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 본 연구는 Pear의 파산 원인을 살펴보고, DTx의 지속적인 성장을 위한 전략을 모색하고자 한다. 연구방법론으로 빅카인즈(BIG KINDS)에 탑재된 국내 신문 기사를 추출하고, 빅카인즈에 내장된 관계도 분석 및 연관어 분석을 수행하고, 그 후 타게뜨(Taguette)를 활용한 내용 분석을 복합적으로 적용하였다. 연구 결과를 통해 Pear의 파산 원인으로 의사 처방의 부족, 환자의 적응 어려움, 보험급 여 제한, 비즈니스 모델의 한계, 나 홀로 전략 등을 도출하였으며, DTx 성장 전략으로 신뢰 확보, 수용도･사용률 제고, 규제 정비･제도 개선, 비즈니스 모델 혁신, 협력 기반 생태계 구축 등이 필요하다는 점을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 빅카인즈에 내장된 분석과 내용 분석을 접목한 연구방법론을 이론적 관점에서 제안하였다. 본 연구 결과는 실무적 관점에서 DTx 기업이 환경분 석과 전략 수립에 활용할 수 있으며, DTx 산업을 활성화하고 진흥하기 위한 정책 수립의 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
