Ma Kwang-soo’s literature focuses on various symbols, revealing the author’s thoughts, characters’ structures, and mental desires to readers. The purpose of this study is to analyze the movement of symbols revealed in Ma Kwang-soo’s literary works and to analyze the structure of works that mix fantasy and reality with intellectuals and himself as motifs through the times, and to find out that the process and intention of establishing the “symbols” pursued in the process of mental change from the times to personal privacy and desires are tools of literary creation. The subject of the study shows the central symbol of “nail,” which has been established from beginning to end in his literature, to the reader in various ways, through the representative symbol “nail,” centering on Ma Kwang-soo’s poem. This leads to a process of conveying a sense of subject connected to various subjects through specific classification in a repeated symbol even when assisting with a three-dimensional part of a special work or person in creation. The key part of Ma’s work is the very core part of Ma’s work is the symbol. This study presents a re-evaluation of various devices or characters through symbols, not prejudices limited to gender liberation and cultural liberalism, which are implicitly considered premature in Korean society through consideration of the creative process and movement of symbols revealed in Ma Kwang-soo literature.

마광수의 문학은 다양한 상징을 중심으로 독자들에게 작가의 생각과 인물의 구조, 정신적인 욕망이 드러난다. 본 연구의 목적은 마광수의 문학작품에서 드러난 상징의 이동 과정을 분석하며 시대를 거쳐 지식인과 자신을 모티브로 한 판타지와 현실을 섞어 놓은 작품 구조를 분석하는 과정에서 마광수의 주변에서 일어난 일들과 그의 정신적 변화 과정에서 추구한 ‘상징’이 시대에서 개인의 사 생활과 욕망으로 바뀌며 궁극적으로 추구하는 것들을 하나의 상징으로 정착시키는 과정과 의도가 문예 창작의 도구임을 규명한다. 연구 대상은 마광수의 시를 중심으로 대표 상징인 ‘손톱’을 통해 그의 문학에 있어 시작과 끝까지 자리 잡은 ‘손톱’이라는 중심적인 상징을 독 자에게 다양한 모습으로 보여준다. 이는 창작에 있어 특별한 작품이나 인물이 입체적으로 드러나는 부분을 보조할 때도 반복되는 상징 속에서 특정한 분류를 통해 다양한 주제가 글에 연결된 주제 의식을 전달하는 과정으로 이어진다. 마광수의 작품에서 핵심적인 부분은 바로 상징이다. 본 연구는, 마광수 문학에 드러난 상징의 창작 과정과 이동에 대한 고찰을 통해 한국 사회에서 아직은 시기상조라고 암묵적으로 생각되는 성 해방과 문화적 자유주의에 국한된 선입견이 아닌 상징을 통해 다양한 장치 혹은 인물에 대한 재평가를 제시한다.
