This study examined the types of rural images represented in rural daily life vlog channels on YouTube. In these channels, rural areas tend to be romanticized as pastoral landscapes or represented as a form of nostalgia for ‘disappearing things’ such as simplicity, the past, purity, and authenticity, akin to existing rural representation videos. This may be the channel operator’s response to the expectations of subscribers who demand nostalgia and healing or the result of the internalizing of the ‘imagined’ rural areas previously known. However, because these videos are created by residents living in rural areas and non-professional producers, the meanings of these videos are dispersed or complex. In addition, the working conditions of the rural areas in these channels are imagined as poor; they are culturally alienated spaces, exclusive spaces, spaces supported by state and local governments, and spaces where one can live if one tolerates a certain level of inconvenience. Despite the complex image of rural areas, it should be taken into account that these images are combined with the economic, social, and cultural environments surrounding the channel operators and that individual experiences are imagined as expanded general rural experiences. The rural image in these channels is imagined in various layers and becomes complex. This is because the daily lives of rural residents, who are channel operators, are formed in a relationship that does not entirely cater to the commercialism or popularity of YouTube operations.

이 연구는 유튜브에서의 농촌 일상 브이로그 채널이 어떠한 농촌 이미지를 재현하고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 이들 채널에서 농 촌은 기존의 농촌 재현 영상물들과 마찬가지로 전원적 풍경으로 낭만화되거나, 소박함, 과거, 순수함, 진정성 등의 ‘사라져가 는 것’에 대한 향수로 재현되는 경향이 나타났는데, 이는 향수와 힐링을 요구하는 구독자 기대에 대한 채널 운영자의 반응이 거나 이미 알고 있는 ‘상상’의 농촌을 내면화한 결과일 수 있다. 그러나 농촌에서 살아가는 거주민인 동시에 비전문 제작자의 영상이기에 이들 영상의 의미는 분산되거나 복합적으로 나타나고 있다. 더해서 이들 채널에서의 농촌은 열악한 노동 공간, 문 화적 소외 공간, 배타적 공간, 국가 및 지자체의 지원 공간, 일정 정도의 불편함을 감수한다면 살아갈만한 공간 등으로 상상되 고 있다. 농촌이 이처럼 복합적으로 상상됨에도 불구하고, 이러한 상상에는 채널 운영자들의 둘러싼 경제, 사회, 문화적 환경 이 결합되어 있으며, 개별적인 경험이 농촌 일반 경험으로 확장되어 상상된다는 점이 감안되어야 한다. 그럼에도 이들 채널에 서의 농촌 이미지가 다양한 층위로 상상되고 복잡해지는 데에는 채널 운영자인 농촌 거주민의 일상이 상업성이나 대중성에 전적으로 영합하지 않는 관계 속에서 이루어지고 있는 것으로 해석해 볼 수 있다.
