This study explores the commoning practices of the women of the Palgocheon Guardians, who actively engage in activities centered around Palgocheon, a village stream in Daegu, South Korea. The Palgocheon Guardians undertake various tasks, including preserving the stream’s ecosystem, conducting environmental cleanups, and educating local residents. They perceive the stream as a shared community resource and continuously work to maintain and nurture it. Applying Gibson-Graham’s concept of commoning, this study examines how commoning practices manifest across ecological, cultural, knowledge-based, and social dimensions. Employing a case study approach, data were collected through interviews and document analysis to investigate the roles women play as key agents in environmental activism and the impact of their practices on the sustainability of ecological communities. The findings reveal that the Palgocheon Guardians lead alternative, nature-friendly stream restoration practices and contribute to embedding environmental protection as a cultural norm within the local community. Furthermore, their grassroots efforts in recognizing and preserving the stream as a shared community resource suggest the potential for a new model of participatory stream management. This study highlights the critical role of women in local environmental movements and discusses how grassroots ecological community practices can serve as a crucial strategy for ensuring sustainability.

본 연구는 대구 지역의 마을 하천인 팔거천을 중심으로 활동하는 ‘팔거천지킴이’ 여성들의 커머닝(commoning) 실천을 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 팔거천지킴이 는 하천 생태계 보전, 환경 정화, 주민 교육 등의 활동을 수행하며, 하천을 지역 공동체가 공유하는 자원으로 인식하고 돌보고 지속시키는 실천을 이어가고 있다. 본 연구는 Gibson-Graham (2016)의 커머닝 개념을 적용하여, 생태·문화·지식·사회적 차원에서 커머닝 실천이 어떻게 발현되는지를 분석한다. 연구 방법으로 사 례 연구를 채택하였으며, 면접 조사와 문헌 분석을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 이를 바탕으로 여성들이 환경 운동의 주체로서 수행하는 역할과 그들의 실천이 생태 공동체에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다. 연구 결과, 팔거천지킴이는 자연 친화적 하천 복원을 위한 대안적 실천을 주도하며, 환경 보호를 지역 공동체의 문화로 정착 시키는 데 기여하고 있음이 확인되었다. 또한, 하천을 공동체가 공유하는 자원으로 인식하고 이를 보존하려는 풀뿌리 여성들의 커머닝 실천이 하천 운동의 새로운 모델로 기능할 가능성을 제시한다. 본 연구는 지역 환경 운동에서 여성들의 역할을 조명하며, 풀뿌리 차원의 실천이 지속 가능성을 확보하는 데 중요한 전략이 될 수 있음을 논의한다.
