While some perceive vigilantism positively, it ultimately raises significant social concerns, such as the weakening of the rule of law. In modern society, vigilantism has expanded beyond physical spaces into cyberspace, emerging in the form of cyber vigilantism. This study employs latent class analysis to examine citizens' perceptions of vigilantism and offers recommendations for research and policy. The findings reveal that the majority of participants regard extralegal sanctions as complementary to the legal system. Latent class analysis identified two distinct groups: those viewing vigilantism from the perspective of justice realization and those perceiving it as personal vengeance. Notably, participants who view vigilantism as a means of achieving justice support it not due to distrust in the criminal justice system but as a solution to the blind spots it cannot address. Based on these findings, the study discusses policy recommendations to discourage vigilantism.

일부에서는 자경주의에 관한 긍정적 시각도 존재하지만, 결국 사적제재는 법치주의의 약화 등 사회적 우려를 불러일으킨다. 특히 현대 사회에서 자경주의는 물리적 영역에서 온라인 공간으로 확장되어 온라인 사적제재라는 새로운 형태로 나타나고 있다. 이 연구는 잠재계층분석을 통해 자경주의에 대한 시민들의 인식 유형을 분석하고, 자경주의 관련 연구와 정책의 필요성을 제언하였다. 연구 결과, 표본 중 다수는 사적제재를 법률 체계의 보완 수단으로 평가하였다. 잠재계층분석 결과, 자경주의를 정의 실현의 관점으로 바라보는 집단과 개인적 복수 유형으로 평가하는 집단이 구분되었다. 특히, 정의 실현의 관점에서 사적제재 를 인식하는 표본의 경우 형사사법기관을 불신하기 때문이 아니라, 형사사법기관이 해결하지 못하는 사각 지대에 대한 보완 수단으로서 사적제재를 지지하는 것으로 나타났다. 연구 결과를 토대로 사적제재를 지양하기 위한 정책적 제언을 논의하였다.
