A Study on Toegye Studies in Modern Japan through the Aesthetic based on the mountain and river(山水) - Centered on the Kyushu School (Yokoi Shonan) in the late Edo period
In modern times, Japanese Toegye Study has been mobilized for the ideological integration of Japan and Korea, and has been used to the detriment of its ideology, but at the same time, it cannot be overlooked that it has contributed to the ideological exchange between the two countries. Among them, the Kyushu School (Kumamoto Jitsu-gaku ha), which developed studies centered in Kyushu based on the ideas of Ohska Daiya(大塚退野),attempted to promote orthodox Confucianism using Toegye Study as a springboard. In particular, the school of thought that among the many Confucian scholars, Toegye's theory were in line with Zhu Xi(朱子)'s original intentions, and thus they tried to develop Toegye Study by respecting his scholarship and personality. Among them, the academic activities of Yokoi Shonan, who sought to find the purity of Toegye Study in accordance with its original intent and tried to apply it to Japanese society, are worth noting. The traditional Eastern art theory, defined as *poetry like its own person( 詩如其人),, has pursued the ideal of cultivating a moral human being by expressing the work and personality in unison, so Toegye s thought can also be approached from an artistic perspective. Traditionally, Confucian scholars sought to express their own philosophy not only through learning from classics but also through poetry, and they sought to cultivate themselves through this process. Therefore, in order to understand the true ideological aspect of the discipline, it is worth exploring not only their philosophy but also their artistic view expressed through poetry. However, although individual studies on the poems of Toegye and Yokoi Shonan have been attempted in both Korea and Japan, there have been no cases of comparison. In particular, compared to the importance of Toegye Study in the history of modern Japanese thought, there is an absolute lack of research on Yokoi Shonan, who played a significant role in the development of the field.Although Yokoi Shonan's creative poetry is not as numerous as that of Toegye, Shonan also attempted to spread his ideas through his prolific writings. Therefore, comparing and analyzing their poems to elucidate their meaning and examine their artistic significance through this can be seen as having research value in itself. In particular, if we can discover the positive elements, such as the acquisition of pure emotions and the cultivation of character, contained in the poetry of Toegye and Yokoi Shonan, who played an important role in the ideological exchange between Korea and Japan, it is believed that we will be able to contribute to the cultural exchange and content development between Korea and Japan to some extent.
