The purpose of this qualitative study is to comprehend the factors that influence the internal transition of student veterans. This study was conducted with male students from a four-year university in the Gyeongnam region. After obtaining IRB approval, advertisements were placed on campus for data collection. For the purpose of the study, 12 military-returned students (from the humanities, social sciences, and engineering fields) participated in in-depth interviews, each lasting 60 minutes. The data was analyzed using Charmaz's (2014) initial coding and focused coding processes. The research finding indicated that students in their first year of college had difficulties adjusting to the new environment and establishing their goals. However, during their military service, they gained various challenges and experiences, which increased their sense of achievement and self-confidence. After returning to their college, they maintained a proactive attitude towards their college life. Student veterans underwent an internal transition, and the factors affecting this internal transition were related to their military experiences. In particular, experiences such as "challenges," "leadership," and "cultural diversity" played a significant role in transitioning their "given life" into a "self-directed life." The important point is that these experiences were repetitive and continuous throughout the military service period. The findings of this study hold significance as they provide foundational data and valuable insights for university administrators concerned with college retention and student success and contribute to guiding improvements in university services.

이 질적 연구의 목적은 대학 1학년 시기에 소비적인 삶을 살았던 남자 대학생들이 복학 후 경험하는 내적 삶의 전환에 주목하고, 이들의 내적 삶의 전환에 영향을 미친 요인을 탐색하는 것이다. 이 연구는 경남 지역의 4년제 종합 대학 남자 대학생들을 대상으로 진 행하였다. 연구 목적을 위해 군 복무를 마친 12명의 군 복학생(인문, 사회, 공학계열)이 심층 면담(60분)에 참여하였다. 자료 분석을 위해 연구자는 Charmaz(2014)의 두 코딩 과 정(초기코딩, 집중코딩)을 적용하였다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 학생들은 대학으로의 전환 과정에서 어려움을 겪었다. 즉, 새로운 학업 환경과 인간관계에 적응하고 삶의 목표를 찾는 데 있어 주체적이거나 적극적인 태도를 갖추지 못했다. 그러나 군 복무를 통해 도전 과 마주하며 성취감과 자신감을 키웠다. 특히, 다양한 사람들과의 관계에서 유연함을 배 우고, 리더십을 발휘하면서 내적 성장의 기회를 얻었다. 이러한 경험은 복학 후 학생들 이 더욱 주체적이고 주도적인 자세를 가지도록 이끌었다 . 이와 관련하여, 학생들의 군 경험은 세 가지 주요 요소로 응축될 수 있었다. 첫째, 매 순간 낯설고 극한의 상황에 도전 해야 했던 ‘도전경험’, 둘째, 다양한 배경의 사람들과 관계를 맺으며 타인의 삶을 배웠던 ‘관계의 다양성 경험’, 셋째, 자신이 소속되어 있던 조직(분대)을 이끌어야 했던 ‘리더십 경험’이 그것이다. 중요한 점은 이러한 경험이 군 복무 기간 동안 반복적이며 지속해서 이루어졌다는 점이다. 이번 연구에서 확인된 군대에서의 ‘도전’, ‘관계의 다양성’, 그리 고 ‘리더십’ 경험이 이들의 ‘주어진 삶’을 ‘주도하는 삶’으로 전환하는 데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 이번 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 대학 유지 (college retention)와 학생 성공(student success)에 관심을 기울이고 있는 대학 행정가들에게 기초 자료와 유용한 정보를 제공하 고, 대학 서비스 개선 방향을 제시하는데 기여 했다는 점에서 연구의 의의가 있다.
