This study aims to explore the identity of career education studies as an independent academic discipline by analyzing the extent to which it satisfies the fundamental conditions of academic establishment and defining its disciplinary characteristics. The findings of this study are as follows. First, from the perspective of content-based disciplines, career education studies possesses a distinct research domain with unique concepts and theories. Moreover, career education studies employs quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research methodologies, and the presence of an academic community, primarily centered around the Korean Society for Career Education, indicates that it largely meets the fundamental conditions for academic establishment. Second, an analysis of career education studies from the perspective of knowledge classification systems reveals that it is categorized not as a subject-matter education discipline but rather as a domain-based education field and lifelong education sector. Furthermore, in terms of its academic characteristics, career education studies can be classified as an applied and practice-oriented discipline that adopts a multidisciplinary approach and emphasizes process-centered research. Based on these findings, this study underscores the necessity of further research to establish the academic structure of career education studies and explore its applicability across various educational contexts, including school education, lifelong learning, vocational education, and human resource development (HRD).

이 연구는 진로교육학의 학문적 성립 조건 충족 가능성과 학문적 성격을 분석하여, 독립된 분과학문 으로서의 정체성을 탐색하는 데 목적을 두었다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 진로교육학은 내용학적 관점에서 고 유한 탐구 대상을 가지고 있으며, 독자적인 개념과 이론이 있다는 것이 확인되었다. 또한, 진로교육학 에서는 양적·질적·혼합 연구 방법이 활용되며, 한국진로교육학회를 중심으로 학문 공동체가 형성됨 에 따라, 학문적 성립 조건을 대부분 충족하고 있다는 것이 확인되었다. 둘째, 진로교육학의 학문적 성 격을 지식 분류 체계의 관점에서 분석한 결과, 진로교육학은 교과교육학이 아니라 분야교육과 평생교 육군으로 분류되고 있다는 것이 확인되었다. 또한, 학문적 특성 상 관점에서 분석한 결과, 진로교육학 은 응용학이자 실천학이며, 다학문적 접근과 과정 중심적 연구를 기반으로 하는 학문적 성격을 갖는다 는 것이 확인 되었다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로, 진로교육학의 학문적 구조를 정립하고, 학교 및 평생교육, 직업교육, 인적자원개발(HRD) 등 다양한 교육 환경에서의 적용 가능성을 탐색하는 연구의 필요성을 제언하였다.
