The 18th-century Anglican minister John Wesley and the Wesleyan community that led the 19th-century North American Holiness Movement considered holiness the most important motive, principle, direction, and limitation of their faith and actions. This view was passed on to the Korean Evangelical Holiness Church(KEHC), which was inspired by Wesleyan theology and the North American Holiness Movement and established its constitution. Since then, holiness has been firmly established as a core tenet of faith that can both build and destroy the KEHC. Nevertheless, if we look at the main discourses on holiness in the KEHC today, we can see that although there are practical discussions on how to practice holiness, there is a lack of theological exploration of ‘what’ holiness is. In other words, there is only a lot of practical methods and cases for holiness without theoretical foundations or standards. Therefore, through this study, the author intends to conduct a theological review of what holiness is and establish a theological foundation and guidelines to help KEHC and Korean believers understand and practice holiness according to the biblical command for holiness (1 Thessalonians 4:3; Titus 2:12). In the first part of the study, the author examines the context of the ancient Near East in which the Old Testament was written, and reveals that holiness does not simply encompass moral or ethical dimensions, but is fundamentally connected to the absolute attributes of God such as otherness, transcendence, and simplicity, and to the personal and relational aspects of the holy God who interacts with and sanctifies ordinary and common objects, places, and beings. Then, in the second part of the study, the author analyzes the context of the ancient Greco-Roman world in which the New Testament was written. In this context, the author reveals that the New Testament’s understanding of holiness is connected to the mystery of the Incarnation in contrast to pagan interpretations, and that this is closely connected to God’s way of being and God’s way of behaving for seeking others to be holy like God. And in the third and final part, the author clarifies what holiness the KEHC emphasizes based on the two aspects of holiness already examined based on the Old and New Testaments, namely, holiness as an essential attribute of God and holiness as a personal and relational attribute that sanctifies others, and clarifies that the love of God and love of neighbor, prayer, and Bible reading that we have practiced to pursue a holy life are not human efforts or products to obtain holiness, but the way of being and behaving of holiness itself.

18세기 영국 성공회 목사 존 웨슬리와 19세기 북미 성결운동을 이끈 웨슬리안 공 동체는 성결을 그들의 신앙과 행동의 가장 중요한 동기, 원리, 방향, 한계로 여겼다. 이러한 관점은 웨슬리 신학과 북미 성결운동에서 영감을 받아 헌법을 제정한 한국 성 결교회로 전달되었다. 그 이후로 성결은 한국 성결교회를 세우기도 하고 무너뜨리기 도 하는 신앙의 핵심 교리로서 확고히 자리 잡았다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 오늘날 한국 성결교회의 성결에 대한 주요 담론을 살펴보면, 성결을 실천하는 방법에 대한 실천적 논의는 있지만 ‘무엇’이 성결인가에 대한 신학적 탐구는 부족하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 다시 말해 이론적 토대나 기준 없이 성결을 위한 실천적 방법 및 사례만 난무하고 있 다. 따라서 필자는 이 연구를 통해 성결이 무엇인지에 대한 신학적 검토를 수행하고 한국 성결교회와 한국 신자들이 성결에 대한 성경적 명령(살전4:3; 딛2:12)에 따라 성 결을 이해하고 실천할 수 있도록 돕는 신학적 토대와 지침을 수립하고자 한다. 먼저 연구의 첫 번째 부분에서 필자는 구약성경이 기록된 고대 근동의 맥락을 살펴보고 성 결이 단순히 도덕적 또는 윤리적 차원을 포괄하는 것이 아니라 타자성, 초월성, 단일 성과 같은 하나님의 절대적 속성과 평범하고 흔한 사물, 장소, 존재와 교류하고 거룩하게 하려는 거룩하신 하나님의 인격적, 관계적 측면과 근본적으로 연결되어 있음을 밝힌다. 그런 다음 연구의 두 번째 부분에서 필자는 신약성경이 기록된 고대 그리스- 로마 세계의 맥락을 분석한다. 이러한 맥락에서 필자는 신약 성서의 성결에 대한 이 해가 이교적 해석과 대조적으로 성육신의 신비와 연결되어 있으며, 이는 더 나아가 타자가 하나님처럼 거룩해지기를 바라는 하나님의 존재 방식(being)과 하나님의 행동 방식(behaving)과 밀접하게 연관되어 있음을 밝힌다. 그리고 세 번째이자 마지막 부 분에서 필자는 구약과 신약성경을 바탕으로 이미 고찰한 성결의 두 가지 측면, 즉 하 나님의 본질적 속성으로서의 성결과 타자를 거룩하게 하는 인격적이고 관계적인 속성 으로서의 성결을 바탕으로 한국 성결교회가 강조하는 성결이 무엇인지 밝히고, 성결 한 삶을 추구하기 위해 우리가 실천해 온 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑, 기도, 성경 읽기 는 성결을 얻기 위한 인간적 노력이나 산물이 아니라 성결 자체의 존재 방식과 행동 방식임을 밝힌다.
