This study provides an in-depth analysis of The Pillow man, exploring its psychological and philosophical dimensions through character and narrative examination. By integrating Lacan and Jung’s psychological perspectives with Freud’s psychoanalytic theories-particularly repression, the unconscious, trauma, and the death instinct (Thanatos)-this research seeks to illuminate the work’s underlying structure and symbolic framework. The primary objective is to expand the theoretical foundation for directing The pillow man by delving into the meta-symbolic structure of its character and narrative. Specifically, the study investigates the complex interplay between trauma and artistic creation, offering deeper insights into the nature of creativity and human psychology. To achieve this, Freud, Lacan, and Jung’s core psychoanalytic concepts serve as the primary theoretical framework, with Freud’s notion of “Repetition Compulsion” applied to analyze the meta-narrative structure and the characters’ recurring encounters with unconscious trauma. Through an in-depth examination of the characters’ psychological conflicts and unconscious trauma- particularly focusing on Katurian-this study explores how childhood experiences shape adult psychological structures. Additionally, by analyzing the interaction between Katurian’s embedded stories and the overarching narrative, the research investigates the work’s symbolism, the function of meta-narrative, and the tensions between ideological forces such as liberalism and totalitarianism, as well as social power dynamics and individual psycological resistance. Furthermore, by focusing on The Pillowman’s narrative structure and symbolic elements, this study examines how trauma is represented and artistically sublimated through symbolic imagery. Ultimately, it offers a psychoanalytic of human psychology, and societal responsibility. This interdisciplinary approach, bridging literature and psychology, not only enhances the understanding of The Pillow man but also contributes to broader discussions on psychological conflict and the promotion of individual and societal psychological growth.
