Recently, there has been a growing trend of picture books being adopted as primary sources for OSMU(One Source Multi-Use) in children’s musicals. This trend highlights the suitability of picture books for adaptation into other media. Given the unique nature of picture books, which simultaneously employ both ‘telling’ through text and ‘showing’ through illustrations, various modes of adaptation are possible. This study examines the transformation of storytelling when picture books are adapted into musicals. It analyzes three children’s musicals based on original picture books that were performed in 2024, exploring their adaptation and staging methods and summarizing their significance. The first case, “The Legend of Friends” by author Lee Jieun, adhered closely to the original story. The adaptation maintained the fundamental plot, faithfully reproducing it on stage. The second case, “The 100-Story House in the Sea” by Japanese author Toshio Iwai, leveraged the original work’s emphasis on visuals over text. This adaptation employed compression and focus, selectively omitting and extending certain elements, resulting in a multifaceted transformation. The third case, “Watermelon Swimming Pool” by author AnnyeongDal, opted for a transformative adaptation approach. Due to the simplicity of the original plot, the adaptation crafted a new narrative centered on a character depicted in the illustrations. These three examples illustrate how storytelling changes during the process of media conversion, showcasing the diverse potential of picture books for adaptation into other media formats.

최근 그림책이 유·아동 뮤지컬의 OSMU의 원천 소스로 많이 채택되는 흐름을 보이는데 이는 그림책이 다른 매체로 전환되기에 적합하다는 반증이다. 이때 글과 그림으로 ‘말하기’와 ‘보여주기’를 동시에 작동시키는 그림책의 특성상 다양한 각색 양상이 나올 수 있다. 본고는 그림책이 뮤지컬로 매체 전환될 때 스토리텔링은 어떻게 변화했는지 각색 양상을 살펴보았다. 연구 대상으로 2024년에 공연된 창작 그림책 원작의 유·아동 뮤지컬 세 편을 정해 각각의 각색 방법과 연출 방법을 살펴보고 의미를 정리하였다. 첫 번째 대상인 이지은 작가의 원작 「친구의 전설」은 원작에 충실한 각색을 취해 기본 플롯을 그대로 유지하며 무대에 충실하게 재현했다. 두 번째 대상인 일본 작가 이와이 도시오의 『바다 100층짜리 집』은 글보다 그림으로 많은 것을 보여주는 원작의 특성을 살려 생략과 집중을 택한 압축과 일부 내용을 연장한 다원적 각색을 선택했다. 세 번째 대상인 안녕달 작가의 「수박 수영장」은 원작의 플롯이 단순하기에 그림 중에 등장한 한 인물을 중심으로 새로운 스토리를 새로 쓰는 변형적 각색 방법을 선택했다. 이상과 같은 3편의 매체 전환에 따른 스토리텔링 각색 방법의 차이를 통해 그림책의 매체 전환이 다양한 가능성을 가졌음을 확인해 볼 수 있었다.
