The research was conducted by identifying two candidates among Hansen’s disease survivors living in Sorokdo, namely inpatients at the Sorokdo National Hospital, who had written epic essays or novels, and analyzing their works. We prioritized works by patients who were still alive at the time of the study, and selected works that were highly complete as novels and preferably written in the recent past. As a result, we selected Sorokdo, A Journey to Heaven by Kang Sunbong, published in 2006, and The Mommy’s Sacrifice by Kang Changseok, published in 2016. Both authors have published numerous poetry collections and essay collections, and other works were referenced in this study to analyze the selected two works. In addition, essays by related parties were also utilized in this study to compare the situation of the same era from different perspectives. The detailed analysis was conducted by examining the events in the works and the writers’ attitudes and expressions toward them, examining the effects of the illness experience on the writers’ emotions and attitudes toward life, and cross-checking the relevant data. The definition of Hansen’s disease literature as ‘the works of people housed in Hansen’ disease sanatoriums’ was cited. Because of their inescapable fate of ‘isolation’, introduced Sorokdo on Hansen’s disease literature is a suitable literature through the definition. The discussion delves into the question of what drives both writers to write fiction. Psychoanalytic theory is a theory of narrative or fiction, and addresses Freud’s claim that the psychological origin of artistic creation is ‘sublimation’ and that the artist is a ‘narrow escape from neurosis’. It is necessary to continuously check whether the history of Hansen’s disease and the value of Sorokdo are being conveniently interpreted by those who consume it. In this process, the most important thing is the ‘people’ who have survived the experience of Hansen’s disease and have been involved in the history of Sorokdo. From this perspective, analyzing the literary works written by these people themselves will be a valuable task as a process of exploring their core values.

소록도에 거주하는 한센병 생존자, 즉 국립 소록도병원 입원환자 중 서사적인 수필이나 소설을 창작한 인물을 찾아 두 명의 후보를 발굴하고 그들의 작품을 분석하는 방식으로 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 시작 당시 생존한 환자들의 작품을 우선으로, 소설로서 완성도가 높은 작품과 되도록 근래에 쓰인 작품을 기준으로 하였고, 그 결과 2006년에 발간된 강선봉의 『소록도, 천국으로의 여행』과 2016년에 발간된 강창석의 『엄니의 희생』을 선정하였다. 두 작가 모두 다수의 시집과 수필집을 낸 경력이 있고, 선정된 두 작품의 분석을 위해 다른 작품들도 본 연구에 참고하였다. 또 같은 시대 상황을 다른 관점에서 비교하고자 관계자의 수필도 본 연구에 활용하였다. 세부적으로 작품 속의 사건들과 이에 대한 작가의 태도와 표현 방식을 살펴 질병 경험과 이를 통한 작가의 감정과 삶의 태도에 대한 영향을 살펴보고 관계 자료를 교차 확인하는 방식으로 진행하였다. 한센병 문학은 그들이 피할 수 없었던 숙명인 ‘격리’를 그 모태로 한다는 점에서 ‘한센병 요양소에 수용된 사람들의 작품’이라는 정의를 인용하였고, 이에 합당한 문학으로서 ‘소록도 한센병 문학’을 소개하였다. 고찰에서는 두 작가에게 무엇이 소설을 쓰도록 추동하는가에 대해 깊이 들여다보았다. 정신분석을 외부적인 분석 장치로서가 아니라 그 자체로, 서사 이론 혹은 소설의 이론이기도 하다는 주장을 본 연구에서 적용하였고, 예술 창작의 심리적 기원이 ‘승화(sublimation)’이고, 예술가를 ‘신경증(neurosis)으로부터 가까스로 도피한 사람’이라고 언급했던 프로이트의 주장을 다뤘다. 이를 확장하여 ‘인간의 삶은 기본적으로 의미를 찾아가는 과정이고, 인간은 그 과정에서 행복을 찾을 수 있다.’라는 문장으로 압축할 수 있는 실존주의 심리학 이론(로고 테라피)과 연결될 수 있음을 제시하였다. 한센병의 역사와 소록도의 가치를 소비하는 대상들이 각자의 관점에서 편의적으로 받아들이고 있는 건 아닌지 확인하는 과정은 지속적으로 필요하다고 생각된다. 이 과정에서 가장 중요한 것은 한센병 질병 경험에서 생존한, 소록도 역사와 함께한 ‘사람’일 것이다. 그런 관점에서 이들이 직접 쓴 문학작품을 분석하는 일은 그 핵심 가치를 탐구하는 과정으로써 소중한 작업이 될 것이다.
