This paper examines the criticism and advocacy debate on Catholicism between Lee Ki, a Confucian scholar in Honam, and Father Robert, a missionary in the Yeongnam region in the late 19th century, and explores the aspects and features of the Expulsion and Apologetics debate that have changed as we enter the period of mission freedom. Lee Ki's criticism of Catholicism is based on the worldview of Confucian Neo-Confucianism as a Confucian scholar, and it is in line with the criticism of the Catholicism that has continued in Joseon since the late 18th century. In addition, Father Robert's logic for advocating Catholicism was also a theoretical answer that can be seen in various books on Catolicism written in Chinese. However, the Joseon Catholic Church's attitude toward controversy changed significantly when the period of Catholic persecution ended and mission activities were tolerated due to the signing of a treaty of Korea and France. Father Robert follows the old Catholic exclusion logic of the previous era, showing ridicule and contempt for Lee Ki, a Confucian scholar who criticizes Catholicism. On the other hand, Lee Ki insists that Catholicism must be banned in Joseon, but the method was different from that of Confucian scholars in the previous period. Unlike the existing hard-line responses such as persecution and punishment, Lee Ki insisted that Catholicism be regulated by the Joseon system and at the same time made people believe in Catholicism freely. Lee Ki believed that Confucian values and Joseon's traditional living principles were much superior to Catholicism and Western ones, so he was convinced that not banning Catholicism could be a way to ban Catholicism.

본고는 19세기 후반 호남의 유학자 이기(李沂)와 영남 지역 선교사 로베르(Robert) 신부 사이에 있었던 천주교에 대한 비판과 옹호 논쟁을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 선교 자유 시기로 접어들면서 변화된 척사-호교 논쟁의 양상과 특성을 탐색하였다. 이기의 천주교 비판은 유학자로서 유교 성리학의 세계관에 입각하여 천주교를 비판한 것으로, 18세기 후반 이래로 조선에서 지속된 서학-천주교 비판과 그 결을 같이 하고 있다. 아울러 로베르 신부의 천주교 옹호 논리 역시 종래 동아시아의 여러 한문서학서에서 엿볼 수 있는 원론적인 수준의 답변이었다. 하지만 박해의 시기가 지나고 한불조약으로 인해 선교 활동이 용인되는 국면에서 논쟁을 대하는 천주교회 측의 태도는 크게 달라져 있었다. 로베르 신부는 이전 시대의 낡은 배척 논리를 답습하며 천주교를 비난하는 유학자 이기에 대한 조롱과 멸시의 모습을 보이고 있다. 한편, 이기는 조선에서 결단코 천주교를 금지시켜야 한다고 주장하고 있지만, 그 방법은 이전 시기 유학자들과는 달랐다. 이기는 기존의 박해나 처벌 같은 강경 대응 방식과는 달리, 천주교를 조선의 제도적 틀에 의해 규제하면서 동시에 사람들에게 천주교를 자유롭게 믿게 하자고 주장하였다. 이기는 유교적 가치나 조선의 전통적 생활 원리가 천주교와 서양보다 훨씬 우월하다고 생각하였기 때문에, 천주교를 금지하지 않는 것이 오히려 천주교를 금지하는 방법이 될 수 있다고 확신하였다.
