This study explores Mencius' theory of learning, focusing on the relationship between righteousness (義, Yi) and expediency (權, Quan), and examines how Mencius' theory aims for actionable moral judgment standards and practical approaches within specific realities. Mencius' concept of righteousness serves as the moral foundation for all decisions and actions, embodying the principle of fundamental moral standards necessary for proper conduct. Mencius' concept of expediency is a methodological approach to the practice and expansion of righteousness, based on the moral heart of righteousness, it involves actions of moral practice that appropriately respond to reality. Mencius' concepts of righteousness (義, Yi) and expediency (權, Quan) have the following meanings. Firstly, Mencius' concept of righteousness involves a value orientation that possesses subjective self-determination, providing moral judgment standards for the pursuit of the common good in both individuals and society. Righteousness acts as an essential element for the moral maturity of individuals and society. Mencius viewed righteousness not as an external objective norm but as residing in the inner subjective autonomy that is judged through the mind's reflection and introspection. Therefore, Mencius’ emphasis on continuously practicing righteousness(集義) and prohibiting artificial manipulation of righteousness(助長) highlights how righteousness contributes to moral maturity. Secondly, Mencius' concept of expediency (權, Quan) serves as a method for maintaining and realizing righteousness, acting as an appropriate moral practice according to real-life situations. Expediency is closely linked with the selection in moral dilemmas, involving the application of universal moral norms to specific circumstances, thereby bridging the universality of morality with the particularity of real-world situations. In this respect, Mencius’ concept of expediency suggests the utility and possibility of moral flexibility in determining what standards moral actions should be based on. It also highlights the necessity for individuals to approach and resolve moral issues within society with a sense of responsibility.

본 연구는 맹자 공부론의 이해를 위해 도덕 판단과 실천의 기준이 되는 의(義)와 권(權)의 연관성을 탐색하여 디지털 시대에 개인과 사회에 적용할 수 있는 실천적 공부론을 제시한다. 맹자의 의는 도덕원리의 보편성과 원칙성에 기초한 도덕 판단의 기준이 되고 권은 현실의 특수성과 상황성에 기초한 도덕 실천을 지향한다. 이런 점에서 의와 권의 연관성은 맹자 공부론을 실천적 이해의 관점에서 살펴볼 수 있는 주제이다. 맹자의 의(義)는 주체적 자기 결정권으로 공동선의 추구를 위한 도덕 판단 기준을 개인과 사회에 제공한다. 맹자는 의를 도덕 판단의 기준으로 삼고 의와 리(利)에 대한 논변을 통해서 리에 대한 추구를 사설(邪說)로 비판하면서 공동선을 추구하는 도덕 판단 기준으로서 의를 강조했다. 맹자의 의는 개인과 사회의 도덕적 성숙에 필수적인 요소로 작용한다. 맹자의 의는 외면의 객관적 규범성으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 자신의 반성과 성찰을 통한 내면의 주체적 자율성으로 존재한다. 맹자는 지속적인 의의 실천을 강조하고 의에 대한 인위적 통제인 조장(助長)을 금지하여 의를 도덕적 성숙의 필수적인 요소로 보았다. 맹자의 권(權)은 의를 유지하고 실현하는 상황적합성으로서의 적절한 도덕 실천이다. 권의 사용은 의를 기준으로 하며, 변화에 적절하게 대처하며, 획일적이고 기계적인 중이 아니며, 헤아림을 통한 한쪽의 선택일 수도 있다. 맹자의 권은 보편적 도덕 기준을 특수한 상황에 적용하는 도덕적 딜레마에서의 선택과 긴밀하게 연결된다. 맹자의 권은 도덕적 탄력성의 유용성과 가능성 그리고 개인이 사회 속에서 어떻게 도덕적 문제에 접근하고 해결해야 하는지에 대한 책임의식의 필요성을 제시한다.
